What does it mean for the top 5 brands?

- Ideal times for Apple and Samsung culminating in increased market share %s.

This article is about Apple and what can one foresee and why?

When a company CEO like Apple says, “India is at a tipping point. You can just feel the vibrancy, the dynamism, the feeling that anything here is possible. And it’s so great to be a part of it”- it means he sees the potential that exists based on the similarities with China and the growth story there.
The opening of the two flagship stores makes Apple a full-stack player managing everything from manufacturing to retail.
Apple closed 2022 with a figure of 6 million devices. The two milestones I have in mind are 10 million devices in 2023 and/or a position in the top 5 in 2023.
To get to 10 million devices, Apple has to grow by close to 67% growth over last year. They had increased by 40% in 2022 over 2021. This seems possible.
To enter the top 5, they must have a minimum double-digit share based on past data of the top 5 brands. This is difficult but possible. With 2023 expected to close at a little lower than 2022, let us put the figure at 140 million. A 10% share means 14 million devices.
Let us try putting down the drivers, some already in motion, which can make Apple take this giant leap.
Apple grew from 4.8 million devices in 2021 to 6 million in 2022. With this momentum, it is already on a solid growth trajectory and can hit a 67% growth rate. Its higher-end devices are finding more acceptance in the Indian market, which means people are willing to spend on even the more expensive iPhones, which makes their available range bigger.
Apple’s revenues in India FY ending March were USD 6 Billion, a growth of 50% over the previous year. Wedbush Securities, an investment firm, forecasts their revenues to hit USD 20 billion in 2025, a 233% growth in 3 years. Even if we take one-third of this growth in 2023, we are looking at crossing 10 million devices.
Apple’s planned reshuffling of the management of its international business to put a more significant focus on India, with India becoming its own sales region. The Head of India, Apple, will now report directly to Apple’s head of product sales rather than to the Head of MEA, Mediterranean, and East Europe. The focus would mean a much higher involvement and responsiveness to the Indian market regarding product availability, pricing, trade-ins, marketing etc., to make users switch from an Android to iOS.
8 out of the top 10 smartphone models sold in 2022 were iPhones. The top 3 selling smartphones were iPhones. The other two models from the top 10 were from Samsung. In 2021, Apple had seven models in the top 10, Xiaomi had two and Samsung just one.
The ultra-premium segment (>Rs 45k) grew by 66%, and the premium segment Rs 30-45k grew by 60%. The growth this year could touch triple digits in both these segments. Though all brands would like to have a presence in these segments, the biggest gainers would be Apple, followed by Samsung and, to some extent, OnePlus.
India, with a similar population as China, is a younger country. It has a large middle class and a high % of youth, both aspirational and with easy EMI available. They would like to go for Apple, given an opportunity.
The increasing investments and hiring by its suppliers like Foxconn and an expansion in its manufacturing base to four with the addition of the Tata group is a clear sign of ramping up.
To drive growth and reach 14 million shipments, one of the game changers could be Apple’s decision to focus on SMEs through the Apple Store Online, which will offer a range of services and security features.
There are approx. 7.5 crore SMEs in India. Conventional wisdom puts the success rate of conversion between 2-5%. For calculation purposes, let’s take the lowest 2% conversion rate figure with just five devices per SME; this figure comes to close to 7.5 million. Even if one assumes that 1/4th of this will happen in 2023, it means 1.8 million numbers in 2023. This number cannot and should not be taken as a firm, but it can indeed contribute to Apple crossing the line to be among the top 5 brands in India if things go well.
