District secretary of national federation of telecom employees (NFTE) Ratipal Singh<\/a> said that among 177 BSNL employees got retired on Friday, 48 were associated with their federation.
“BSNL consumers are going to suffer badly as most of the retried employees are lineman and other technicians. In Budaun district, out of 33 employees, 31 took VRS while in Pilibhit of 31 employees 29 opted the same today. Now one can assume how the department will run by two employees there,” Singh said.
Deputy general manager of BSNL Bareilly, Ashvini Kumar Saxena<\/a>, also expressed his anxiety over mass retirement and said, “Of 342 employees, 177 retired today. We have already called tenders and vacant posts will be filled by outsourcing. We hope things will be under control within a month.” However, he said that as of now there was no shortage of manpower in Bareilly.
Notably, there are 7,169 landline and 3,178 broadband customers availing BSNL services. Besides, post-paid mobile phone customers in Bareilly are 4329 while pre-paid ones are 3.21 lakh.
The VRS for BSNL employees was notified in November and the Bareilly had prepared a list of as many as 269 aging employees who are 50 plus.
The cash-strapped public sector undertaking has set a target of offering voluntary retirement to 80,000 employees across the country as 70% of BSNL’s revenue alone is spent on their salary. The BSNL has been lagging behind private players due to its slow Internet speed and data spectrum. While private telecoms have made available 4G services, BSNL is stuck with 2G and 3G.
