Adoption of eSIMs in smartphones should also drive major volume growth with the adoption of eSIM by top players such as Apple and Google.

NEW DELHI: The eSIM functionality – which allows consumers to change operators without changing numbers – will be accessible on 25-30% smartphones in India within the next three years, German digital solutions company Giesecke+Devrient (G&D) believes.

“All major device manufacturers are currently looking at introducing eSIM functionality to the smartphones. However, we'll first have to wait for global adoption of eSIMs to happen on the consumer side,” said Deval Sheth, managing director, Giesecke & Devrient MS India told ET.

Currently, the eSIM penetration is less than 1% in smartphones in India but it is expected to grow in the coming years, as per Counterpoint Research. The overall global eSIM market is estimated to grow from $253.8 million in 2018 to $978.3 million in 2023 at a CAGR of 31%, according to Markets&Markets.

G&D is currently working with telecom operators and device manufacturers for remote SIM card provisioning and management. The company claims to be the sole supplier of SIM card delivery platforms to all four mobile network operators (MNOs) in India.

“We supply Java SIM cards (a market standard for high-end SIM cards) to Reliance
Jio. We've also deployed an eSIM platform at Reliance Jio and Airtel,” Sheth told.

Telcos like market leader
Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel say they are ready to work with eSIMs but are waiting for an expansion of the e-SIM compatible device ecosystem before deploying them.

Previously, Airtel and Reliance Jio partnered with Apple to sell the e-SIM enabled Apple Watches using G&D’s eSIM management platform.

While the eSIM support is also available for smartphones, the handset ecosystem is in its nascent stage with only few smartphones — iPhones XS, XS Max, XR and
Google Pixel 3, which are all at the higher end - supporting eSIMs.

Vodafone Idea had previously told ET that the company was piloting and testing capabilities and will be ready to go live with the forthcoming launch cycle of new eSIM
devices. The telco had said that the demand and adoption of eSIMs would scale up over the next 2-3 years.

The current slow rate of adoption of eSIMs on the consumer side could be attributed to functionality being initially introduced on high-end devices. Currently eSIM is only being largely used for Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine-2-Machine (M2M) solutions.
