NEW DELHI: To accelerate the adoption of open and interoperable solutions in the Radio Access Network (RAN), thirty-one global technology companies today launched the Open RAN Policy Coalition.

Open RAN Policy Coalition founding members include the likes of Airspan, Altiostar, AWS, AT&T,
Cisco, CommScope, Dell, DISH Network, Facebook, Fujitsu, Google, IBM, Intel, Juniper Networks, Mavenir, and others.

The Policy Coalition further aims to accelerate innovation, stimulate competition and expand the supply chain for advanced networks, like the
5G network.

The Coalition said it believes that the U.S. Federal Government has an important role to play in facilitating and fostering an open, diverse and secure supply chain for advanced wireless technologies, by means of funding R&D, and testing open and interoperable networks and solutions, and incentivizing supply chain diversity.

Diane Rinaldo, Executive Director, Open RAN Policy Coalition said that standardization and the development of open interfaces can ensure interoperability and security across players and can reduce entry barriers for new innovators.

In the previous-gen mobile networks, the networks were deployed using fully integrated cell sites, where components were provided by a single manufacturer as a proprietary solution.

However, the industry is transitioning towards standardizing the technical specifications that define open interfaces between radios, hardware, and software to ensure that networks can be deployed by multiple vendors.

Highlighting the benefits of multi-vendor deployments, Open RAN said such deployments can enable a competitive marketplace and can provide greater ability to operators to harness the innovations of multiple suppliers to upgrade their infrastructure with the latest technology.

This arrangement also lets operators to mitigate network threats and enables them to replace or address vulnerable network equipment. They can also shift network capacity based on demand.

Dimitris Mavrakis, Research Director at tech market advisory firm, ABI Research said that the new coalition led by top industry players across the whole telecoms value chain was a confirmation that the Open RAN ecosystem is indeed a market reality.

"Open RAN can disrupt the current verticalized infrastructure supply chain, and support large scale deployments of modularized infrastructure. This coalition illustrates that there is significant activity behind the scenes for Open RAN, and we expect this to be a major milestone in the development of an open and modularized infrastructure ecosystem," he added.

ABI Research expects Open RAN to quickly mature and become a viable alternative for 5G network deployments in the next years. Incumbent vendors, who have so far been somewhat resisting Open RAN, will now be under a tremendous pressure to adopt this approach or face a massive disruption of their business looking forward.
