Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials continue to be lenient toward Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited<\/a> (RJIL<\/a>) as they are yet to recover Rs2.25 crore fine, imposed on the company four months ago. Despite delay in paying the fine, NMC has failed recover it from the Rs50 crore RJIL security deposit.

Not only this, but the officials have also ignored the company not carrying out restoration works in Ajni and Sahakar Nagar where it had damaged roads.

TOI on December 28, 2021 had reported about RJIL laying optical fibre cable by digging trenches in road in Sahakar Nagar, though the NMC had given permission to execute the work using horizontal directional drilling (HDD) technology. The company had followed similar modus operandi on cement road in Ajni.

Though engineers of the NMC’s Laxmi Nagar zone and hotmix department were aware of the violations and destruction of the roads, they did not initiate any action.

After TOI reports, municipal commissioner Radhakrishnan B had directed engineers of hotmix department to take necessary action. Accordingly, a team of hotmix department, led by executive engineer Kamlesh Chauhan, inspected two sites and third one in Jaitala and imposed a fine of Rs2.25 crore and directed RJIL to carry out restoration works in the first week of January itself.

The RJIL officials claimed to have put up the matter before their head office and awaiting clearance. Hence we also did not initiate action, engineers of the hotmix department told TOI.

In the meanwhile, the NMC is yet to get road restoration works done in Sahakar Nagar and Ajni even after six months.

Turning a blind eye toward past violations, the NMC had given permission to RJIL for laying 70km optical fibre cable between July and October. After the work, RJIL carried out shoddy restoration work resulting in the trenched portions turning into potholes, causing inconvenience for the people.

Despite damage to its own infrastructure, especially cement roads, the NMC is yet to get the restoration work carried out by the RJIL.

Strangely, the NMC has also not inspected the remaining 69km stretches to check whether RJIL had dug up trenches on roads or carried out the works using HDD technology and also restoration thereafter.

Also, the NMC is silent on recovery of daily fine of Rs500 from RJIL as the company has failed to complete the works in the stipulated deadline of 3 months.

RJIL spokesperson refused comments on the issue.
