NEW DELHI: Cisco Systems believes that digitisation of businesses would be a big opportunity, and it aims to work together with service operators to tap the opportunity. In an interaction with ETTelecom’s Muntazir Abbas, Cisco Head of Asia Pacific & Japan – Service Provider Business, Sanjay Kaul talks on fifth generation (5G) technology, fiberisation, and cybersecurity. Edited excerpts.

From a network standpoint, do you think it is feasible to have
4G and 5G networks together? And how is Cisco enabling this?

Yes, 4G and 5G network will co-exist. 5G technology, unlike 3G and 4G, has technical attributes like low latency, High density, network slicing makes it unique in terms of creating and enabling mission-critical application in the vertical domain of transport, health, finance, and security. 5G technology and architecture truly provide service provider another opportunity to evolve from being a communication service provider to a true digital value player.

Do you think fiberisation is lacking and is much needed in 5G environment?

Fiber is one area where the ecosystem needs to move fast because today India is only 30 % fiberised and that’s not good. Fiberisation has to take speed. The government needs to step up and hasten the process. Promoting public-private partnerships where players like Jio, Bharti and
Vodafone Idea and ecosystems of vendors could join hands to solve for, and it would ensure Digital India dream.

The government is coming up with National Fiber Authority. What do you think about this move?

Yes, absolutely it’s the right move. It should be a national asset which is available to all kinds of service providers— be it mobile, fixed, cable, dedicated enterprise, and defense for a well-regulated fee.

Do you think full-fledged enterprise services is a next big opportunity for telcos like Jio?

Digitising enterprise, small-and-medium businesses is a huge opportunity. However, service providers and Cisco and other ecosystem partners must work together to create services that are compelling and value adding for businesses— big or small.

So you are in talks with service providers on this front?

Yes of course. We are truly forming a 360-degree relationship with service providers. We are partnering with them to build and shape their network and create services and solutions, and they are in turn are helping us penetrate to masses. We don’t have the reach and capacity to go address large micro SMBs that hungry for digitization and ready to consume our technologies. Service providers are becoming a credible partner and formidable channel for us to reach every large, mid-market and micro SMB customers.

You have also implemented an enterprise solution for Jio offices?

Service providers are our largest enterprise customers. While will sell them infrastructure solution, we also help them digitise their own enterprises. As SP if they use our technologies for their own use, they become credible players to take it to their customers.

Tell us about the government initiative that you are currently working on with the state governments?

We have a program called country digitization acceleration (CDA) aimed at accelerating digitisation in India. Through the CDA program, we are building centers of excellence, centers of innovation and running projects which showcase the impact of digitisation. We are using funds to co-innovate with government agencies, key GTM partners and service provider customers.

Do you think Digital India is a big opportunity for companies like yours?

Yes, it’s a great opportunity. Not just for technology companies but for the whole country and citizens of India. We are working in a holistic way with government, Service Providers and enterprises businesses to help them digitize.

Also, the government is working on the cybersecurity front. Are you a part of that?

Yes, we have Cisco Security & Trust Organization in India, which works with public and private sector customers to help analyze their infrastructure, understand cyber risk, identify and mitigate vulnerabilities, and ensure that their networks are built on a foundation of secure, resilient, and trustworthy products. S&TO India advises on and helps the government shape the national cybersecurity strategy and initiatives.

Do you think 5G telecom gear from vendors like
Huawei and ZTE should be treated cautiously on the heels of recent global developments?

All I would say is one need to be 100% sure of the technology in the gear that is being put to use as cybersecurity is of paramount importance to any nation. The role of the government to make sure that the technology which is deployed does not have a malware or spyware that’s going to damage to the country. They should look at it and evaluate it in detail to make sure that the country is safe.
