This was informed by Union minister of state for communications Devusinh Chauhan<\/a> in the Rajya Sabha while responding to a query by BJD member Prasanna Acharya<\/a>.

The Union minister said under the BharatNet programme, the Centre has been installing as many as 2,542 mobile towers in left wing extremism (LWE)-affected areas, including 483 towers in Odisha. The mobile towers are being installed to provide 4G mobile services in interior pockets.

The minister’s reply assumes significance as the state government has been demanding before the Centre to strengthen the mobile connectivity in the state to accelerate the pace of development.

The minister also said that Wi-Fi hotspots have been installed under BharatNet in 2,511 gram panchayats in Odisha till December 31, 2021. The BharatNet Phase-II<\/a> is being implemented in Odisha by the state government, which is also responsible for its utilization, said the minister.

Under the PM-WANI<\/a> framework, Wi-Fi access points are set up by small entrepreneurs, depending on the market demand, with an objective to earn return on their investment. As many as 1,168 access points have been set up in Odisha, including in rural areas as on February 1, said the minister in his reply.
