<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>NEW DELHI: Fifth-generation or 5G<\/a> cellular wireless networks are being deployed in the mid-band spectrum (3300-4200MHz range) while co-existing with the radio altimeter band used in the aviation industry<\/a>, according to the industry trade organization, 5G America.

For instance, the United States and many other countries are deploying mid-band spectrum in the 3300-4200MHz range.

Yet the US’ aviation industry is raising concerns about the effect of 5G deployed in the 3700-3980MHz range on radio altimeters used in aircrafts and helicopters in the nearby 4200-4400MHz range.

“Globally, the number of
5G network<\/a> deployments is rapidly increasing in the mid-band spectrum. Many nations around the world that are using spectrum in the 3300-4200 MHz range have been successfully operating 5G networks - and have done so without reports of interference to radio altimeters,” said Chris Pearson, President of 5G Americas.

The industry body highlighted that the number of 5G networks has grown to 172 worldwide and provides services to 298 million subscribers.

It noted that there is a growing need to support additional demands for 5G by expanding the commercial availability of low, mid, and high-band spectrum.

“Today, there are approximately 105 network operators around the world that are using mid-band spectrum in either the 3300-4200 MHz range or 3300-3800 MHz range, with some additional interest in deploying the 4400-5000 MHz range. It is therefore important to continue the momentum of harmonized spectrum around the world to align with increased demand for 5G use,” added Prakash Moorut, Head of Spectrum Standardization at Nokia.

“Governments around the world continue to work hard to make spectrum available across all three frequency ranges – low, mid, and high – including the recent allocations in the US, Canada and Mexico. Mid-band spectrum is one of the swaths of critical spectrum for 5G,” said Noman Alam, Director 5G Solutions at
Ericsson<\/a>.

The
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India<\/a> (Trai) had recommended 3300-3600MHz range for the deployment of 5G networks of which 125MHz is currently being used by the ministry of defence<\/a> and the department of space<\/a>. As per reports, the Indian Navy is not ready to vacate the spectrum and even ISRO has raised concerns.
