On October 1, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched next generation (5G) services in the country, being rolled out by incumbent telecom carriers Reliance Jio<\/a> and Bharti Airtel<\/a>.
TCIL, a state-run telecom and IT consulting firm, sees opportunity in 5G-led use cases across multiple sectors including Ashwini Vaishnaw-headed Indian Railways.
\"By using the 700 MHz airwaves, railways-centric applications can be developed,\" the official said, adding that the Indian Railways planned to upgrade the 2G network, and the TCIL has been currently studying the impact and if it can go directly switch to 5G.
\"In long-distance trains, wheels heat up, and sensors using 5G, can be put up. In addition, a driver-assist system can also be deployed so as it can send automated alerts in case a driver develops fatigue,\" Kumar said.
Last year, the Centre allocated 5 MHz of spectrum in the coveted 700 MHz band to Indian Railways for voice and data communication, and signalling in addition to develop and deploy Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) based on Long Term Evolution (LTE)-4G technology.
Internet of Things (IoT) is another use case with applications such as smart energy meters, the official said.
Government, according to him, has an ambitious plan to convert electricity meters into those with a SIM card in the next two years, and with 30-crore households, it offers an opportunity to the public-sector company.
However, in a few states 4G SIM-enabled metres are being deployed that could provide live data to discom servers.
Kumar said that the company, as a system integrator, is also looking to set up 5G-enabled captive networks for enterprises, and is also working aggressively with startups to develop use cases and undertake trials particularly in the mining sector.
\"We are actively working with startups such as in the mining sector to develop use cases or trials. We can rope in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL<\/a>) as a connectivity partner to use their 2500 MHz spectrum band,\" he said, adding that TCIL can act as an system integrator in accordance with the existing norms, and can set up captive networks after necessary spectrum allocations.
Under the current regulatory regime, a system integrator can set up a non-public network for any enterprise given that the latter has a required spectrum leased out from a telecom service provider or is assigned with it directly.
\"5G also offers a good opportunity for India to export technology with support provided by the government.\" Kumar added.
Recently, the state-owned Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) has developed an indiginous 5G non standalone (NSA) core which, however, is yet to be tested in BSNL's telecom network, deployed for proof-of-concept in Chandigarh.
