Mumbai: Fifth generation (5G) telecom networks are expected to power up to 2% of India’s GDP, amounting to $180 billion by 2030 on the back of increasing market penetration, a strengthening economy, and sectoral reforms, said a report by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) and Arthur D Little.

“With over 500 million 5G users in India by 2030, 5G can be truly transformational for the economy. With public and private 5G networks enabling use cases across multiple sectors such as mobility, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, energy and utilities, 5G can have an impact of over USD 180 billion on India’s economy in 2030,” Barnik Chitran Maitra, managing partner, Arthur D. Little India and South Asia said in the study titled - 5G – Unfolding India’s era of digital convergence.

India currently has the second highest number of telecom users in the world, with 1.1 billion users, of which 740 million are 4G customers. However, with the launch of 5G in the country, the shift is expected to offer rapid upgradation of customer experience.

This, the report said, will help in accelerating ARPU (average revenue per user) growth over the next few years. The report projects the telecom ARPU to reach Rs 335 by 2025.

Growing smartphone penetration, significant rise in OTT consumption, digital payments, E-commerce are some of the major factors driving digitization, is already helping boost ARPUs.

The report added that policies like the National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN), now called
BharatNet, which plans to connect all the 2.5 lakh gram panchayats in the country will help enhance India’s potential to 5G adoption by increasing accessibility and affordability.

5G is expected to create new value through hyperconnectivity and become a catalyst for digital transformation across industries. Sectors such as healthcare, energy & utilities, manufacturing, and retail are expected to benefit the most from largescale 5G adoption.

For instance, 10 minutes of browsing Instagram on 5G consumed 207 MB data for him, while on 4G it was around 120 MB. This is because these apps - and others like them - load content in higher quality in areas with ample 5G coverage. Once applications for metaverse, cloud gaming, 4K and 8K streaming come into the picture, data consumption will rise further, said an industry executive.
