NEW DELHI: Top industry executives, and regulatory and government officials participated in the 5G Congress - 2021, organised by ETTelecom.com, a telecom-focussed vertical of the Economic Times, to discuss the policy and industry roadmap for the next generation of wireless technology, on February 25 and 26, with a parallel executive training workshop on the second day.
The fourth edition of South Asia's top telecom event witnessed a footfall of close to 4,000 virtual attendees across the world with more than 40 eminent speakers discussing policy challenges, industry readiness, network expansion, open architecture, backhaul technologies, and devices ecosystem, among others.
Those who addressed at the two-day conference include the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) chairman PD Vaghela, Reliance Jio president Mathew Oommen, Bharti Airtel chief executive (India & South Asia) Gopal Vittal, and managing director and chief executive of Vodafone Idea Ravinder Takkar.
Besides Bharti's vice chairman Akhil Gupta, the event also witnessed participation from well-known international speakers such as Japanese Rakuten's group chief technology officer Tareq Amen, London-based GSMA's senior director Laurent Bodusseau and head of Asia Pacific Julian Gorman.
The industry leaders sought government intervention and stressed the need for freeing up an adequate volume of radiowaves, bringing in India-specific use cases, releasing backhaul spectrum, and rationalisation of the base price.
In 2018, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended frequencies in the 3300-3600 megahertz (MHz) with a base price of Rs 492-crore per unit for the commercial fifth-generation or 5G services in the country.
