Former telecom minister A Raja is set to publish a book on the 2G case in which he was acquitted by a special court last week, likely sparking another round of political controversy. The book, which had reportedly been shelved, will contain revelations about the reasons for his arrest and incarceration, Raja had said earlier.

The “hard-hitting and no-holds-barred” book is likely to be launched on January 20, said a person with knowledge of the matter.

It chronicles crucial events in the 2G case over more than 200 pages, the person said. Having spent 15 months in Tihar Jail, Raja said in an interview in April 2015 that the book will be about his time in prison as well as the reasons why he was sent there, claiming that he “was victimized for breaking the monopolies” and stopped the “telecom monopoly from committing fraud and crime.”

The book, which is being published by Penguin, is likely to contain crucial information regarding the case, said people aware of the matter.

“Mr Raja is a politician and with a case with such magnitude, his political ups and downs are bound to find a mention in a book which he has religiously and assiduously written,” said a confidante. “One will find his struggle, the difficulties he faced, his political decline and the confidence with which he fought the case for all these years (in the book).”

Raja decided to go ahead with the book after his acquittal last week.

“Earlier it was planned to release the book after conclusion of final ar-guments,” said another of Raja’s aides. “But we decided against it as we did not want to indulge in anything which might be misconstrued as influencing the court or public opinion.” The book launch won’t be stopped by the appeals that are being prepared by the Central Bureau of Investigation. “The book will be inspirational for those who are confronted with difficulties,” said one of those cited above.

Raja’s book is likely to contain his side of the story about the correspondence he had with then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other leaders in the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. Raja was accused of misleading the former Prime Minister about the changed procedure for spectrum allocation. The special court, however, found no evidence in the allegations and blamed two officials in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) at the time for misleading Singh.

The book is also likely to be critical of the Comptroller and Auditor General’s report that pegged the notional loss for the issuing of licences in 2008 at Rs 1.76 lakh crore. “He has tried to give a summary of a case with unprecedented political ramifications and voluminous record in nearly 200 pages,” said one of the persons. “The book will have some significant revelations.” The book will also detail how Raja, a law graduate, used his legal knowledge to prepare his case along with his team, people said.
