The active pay direct-to-home (DTH) subscriber base has shrunk by 2.17% on a quarter-over-quarter basis, totaling 65.58 million subscribers<\/a>, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India<\/a>'s (TRAI<\/a>) Performance Indicator Report for Q2 (July-September) 2022.

In comparison, the
DTH subscriber base<\/a> was 67.04 million in the previous quarter.

Over the course of a year, the active pay DTH subscriber base has declined by 4.8% from 68.89 million in September 2021.

Of the 65.58 million active subscribers,
Tata Play<\/a> had the largest share at 33.03%, followed by Bharti Telemedia with 26.49%, Dish TV<\/a> was at 21.67%, and Sun Direct stood at 18.81%.

Barring Dish TV, the other three
DTH operators<\/a> have seen an increase in their market shares.

In the trailing quarter, the DTH
market share<\/a> of the four platforms was as follows: Tata Play (32.81%), Bharti Telemedia (25.99%), Dish TV (22.84%), and Sun Direct (18.37%).

The cumulative active subscriber base of 12 major multi-system operators (MSOs) and one headend in the sky (HITS) operator has dropped by 1.07% QoQ to 45.2 million.

On a YoY basis, the cumulative base of these 13 platforms has seen a 0.7% dip in the active subscriber base. The TRAI has clarified that the active base of these platforms includes subscribers who have been inactive or temporarily suspended for not more than the last 90 days.

As of September, the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB) had granted TV channel licences to approximately 885 channels which is a drop from 892 channels in the June quarter and 906 channels in the same quarter of 2021.

There are 353 satellite pay TV channels out of which 254 are standard definition (SD) channels and 99 are high definition (HD) channels.

There are 23 IPTV Operators in the country with Andhra Pradesh State Fibernet, a state government-owned entity, reporting a subscriber base of 6,19,284 at the end of September 2022.

As per the TRAI report, there are 388 operational private FM radio channels in 113 cities operated by 36 private FM Radio operators.

These 388 FM radio channels have reported cumulative ad revenue of Rs 385.86 crore as of September 2022, which is a 12% increase from Rs 345.12 crore in June 2022.
