<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>NEW DELHI: Telecoms operator and mobile money<\/a> services provider Airtel Africa<\/a> on Thursday said it has partnered with Mukuru<\/a>, a remittance organisation, to enable Mukuru customers to send cross-border transfers to Airtel Money<\/a> customer wallets in 12 African countries.

The telco in a release said the partnership will benefit customers making intra-Africa payments from Southern Africa, where the remittance organisation has a leading presence.

Furthermore, not only will customers be able to receive transfers conveniently but they will also be able to instantly pay for their utility bills, goods and services, among others. The transfers can be cashed out of any
Airtel<\/a> Africa’s exclusive branches, kiosks, and agents, in addition to being able to transfer the money to their families.

“At a time when intra-Africa cross-border payments are of strategic importance, we are pleased to be working together on cross-country mobile
money transfers<\/a>, while also supporting local economies,” said Raghunath Mandava, CEO, Airtel Africa.

“The enablement of digital money transfers between Mukuru and Airtel Africa customers means we can offer greater choice to the hardworking diaspora when providing for their families back home. The freedom to choose the solution best befitting your personal circumstances is pivotal to true economic empowerment,” added Andy Jury, CEO, Mukuru.

As per the telco, the partnership is subject to regulatory approvals.

The service will initially launch in Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with plans in pipeline to roll out to subsequent Airtel Money markets.
