The Airtel MD conceded there had been some SIM consolidation among 2G feature phone users after the doubling of base prepaid rates to Rs 99, but said \u201ca bigger pain\u201d is the continuing shortage of semiconductors and rising chipset prices that has increased entry-level smartphones prices to almost Rs 10,000 (from Rs 6,000 previously), which is inhibiting customer upgrades from 2G-to-4G devices.
He, though, expects this to be only a temporary blip, saying that consumer behaviour, typically, adopts to a new normal over a period of time. In fact, Airtel added more 4G users (5.24 million) in the March quarter compared to around 3 million in the previous three-month period, even after sharply hiking prepaid tariffs last November.
