Airtel<\/a> added 5,300 broadband towers per quarter in past 3 quarters against 1,500 per quarter for Vodafone Idea in India.
Axis Capital said that 99% or 188,591 of Bharti’s towers are on broadband as compared to 86% or 160,097 for Vodafone Idea
Airtel added 18,700 BTS per quarter in 9MFY20 against 15,100 for Vodafone Idea. “BTS addition in Q3FY20 was at the same level for VIL and Bharti (at 12,000),” the brokerage said.
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio has an all 4G network with the highest number of BTS and towers with 4G.
The brokerage said that Airtel still lags Jio on tower fiberization in India. Around 30% of Airtel’s towers are fiberized against 60-70% for Reliance Jio. “This may constrain Bharti’s backhaul speed and act as a bottleneck for data growth on its network,” it added.

The Sunil Mittal-led telco was aggressively looking to expand its 4G or wireless broadband coverage in the rural parts of the country to match the coverage of Reliance Jio’s network in the next twenty-four months, ET Telecom reported recently.
Airtel had also started discussions with its telecom gear vendor partners in these circles to start the expansion.
Airtel already shut down its 3G networks across 11 circles and plans to re-farm the existing spectrum to boost its 4G networks across all circles.
