NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel said that there might not be any need to invoke intra-circle roaming (ICR) pacts with other telecom operators as networks are stable in the country and traffic has stabilized after an initial surge after the 21-day nationwide lockdown was announced.

“We had tested ICR agreements, but we don't see a need to invoke it right now because we don't see networks going down or seeing big networks choking,” Randeep Sekhon, chief technology officer at Bharti
Airtel, told ET Telecom in a telephonic interview.

In Orissa, during Cyclone Fani, all four telcos invoked ICR and used each other's network. “We are ready with the system if need be, I am in touch with my counterparts,” he said.

Airtel has been optimising its network at the backend and adding capacity remotely to handle the traffic increase. It has done improvements at radio, core and transports levels for its nation-wide network.

“Our traffic increased beyond what we had forecasted for Q1, but we quickly deployed those and we are in good shape now,” he said.

Sekhon also revealed Airtel is seeing lesser traffic growth in urban areas compared to the suburban and rural areas. “We saw mass migration, which probably has spread our traffic across India. Increased traffic is being seen in rural India compared to urban. We are now in a new normal.”

He said that Airtel is “very well equipped” to support rural parts of the country. “We had a rural strategy anyhow part of our business and rural capacity is already there.”

Airtel has shut down its 3G network, which has helped it with more capacity to support the traffic increase across India. “Rural is generally less utilized compared to urban. We are in very good shape.”

Sekhon said that the move brought much-needed respite and helped Airtel to manage the traffic in an efficient manner. “We don't see any disruption in the essential part of the internet. Now, people are able to watch more videos without running out of their quota. This helps both telcos to manage their traffic and users to manage the quota. It's a win-win for both.”

The executive said that network engineers faced challenges during physical site-checks initially, but is now getting support from all authorities and enforcement services.

“We have set up a war room to support them in case they are stopped and respective authorities are not updated. Everybody realizes the importance of these times because earlier when Police used to turn us back then their own mobiles won't work and their duties were impacted too,” he added.
