NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel said that OpenRAN will be ready to form a part of its live 5G network towards the end of 2023 fiscal year as the technology is still maturing and costs reduction will take time. A top executive said that the telco has OpenRAN related contracts in place already with different partners.

The telco’s initial phase of 5G network deployment is solely based on technology from traditional equipment vendors, which is considered more mature and advanced to support a large scale network.

“We are a tech-enabling company which uses tech to provide services. So OpenRAN's readiness to serve a larger scale will happen towards the end of 2023 because we want the total cost of ownership to come down,” Randeep Sekhon, chief technology officer at Bharti Airtel, told ET.

The Sunil Mittal-led
telecom operator has awarded 5G network contracts to European vendors Ericsson and Nokia and Korea’s Samsung, leaving out China’s Huawei and ZTE. Airtel recently launched its 5G service based on non-standalone architecture in eight cities and has plans to expand the 5G network to cover the top tier cities by December this year and top 50-60 cities by March 2023. It plans to cover the entire country by March 2024.

“...the chips which will give you lower cost, lower power and lower form factors are generally coming from the chip manufacturers, who have started shopping them now and by the time they get into labs and production, the time will be next year second half. Then there is maturity of the software,” Sekhon said.

“...we had live [OpenRAN] sites in Punjab trials. And we were pleasantly surprised with the results. It was pretty good. And, now we have other versions live in our own labs in Manesar…by next year second half, you should see volumes start picking up on OpeRAN,” he added.

Airtel is working with different technology partners, including companies from India, US, Taiwan and Japan to build a complete 5G stack based on open technologies.

ET previously reported that Airtel was working with US’s Mavenir, Xilinx, Japan’s Altiostar and NEC and Taiwan’s Sercom to develop equipment using OpenRAN technology. The telco had earlier produced its own 4G small cells by collaborating with Altiostar and Sercom. After seeing the success, the company diverted its focus on just 5G gear, including radio, small cells, routers and massive Mimo.

“...we don't own that stack, rather we are playing the role of a matchmaker. OpenRAN gives you the opportunity to mix the best technologies from different partners…it is like a Subway sandwich where you can make the sandwich as per your requirement… Similarly we have a set ecosystem partners with which this will get launched. And I would imagine now we are going steady,” Sekhon said, adding that Airtel already has OpenRAN contracts in place with partners.

“It is the matter when we start to deploy it at scale in our networks…we have kind of solved the system integration cost problems. We have a plan. And there are a few more wrinkles, which we have to handle and we are meeting with partners to solve it. We have a line of sight,” the executive added.
