The showcasing of diverse 5G uses cases in partnership with network vendors
Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia is part of Airtel’s 3.0 vision, under which the Sunil Mittal-led telco aims to build digital networks and services that enrich peoples’ lives.

The company has set up
Airtel X Labs in Bengaluru from where it aims to build 5G use cases for India and world markets. The tech facility, "would drive cutting edge innovation across 5G related technologies such as AI, IoT, AR and VR," the company said in a statement Thursday. Airtel is busy putting together a world class team at X Labs.

“Airtel has been a pioneer when it comes to introducing latest technologies, and innovation is core to our DNA, and we will continue to build exciting digital products for a Digital India,” Randeep Sekhon, the company’s CTO, said Thursday in the official statement.

For instance, Airtel’s connected home 5G use case leverages advanced home IoT (internet of things) technology and depicts a life size replica of a modern connected home with intelligence devices and appliances. The connected home is powered by a 1 Gbps V-fiber link to enable seamless digital experience. The company also demonstrated an in-house developed multi-screen video platform for seamless content play across devices.

Airtel’s connected car, in turn, shows how IoT can empower drivers through auto telemetry, which captures and pushes data related to key parameters of a car and its real-time functioning.

Separately, in partnership with China’s
Huawei, Airtel demonstrated an AR-based holographic 5G communication where users feel fully immersed when communicating with a live hologram. AR technology is particularly relevant and has huge potential in India in fields like assisted learning & training, gaming to live events and entertainment. Airtel and Huawei also showcased another VR-based use case with a virtual iPAD, wherein users can play common games such as `Candy Crush Saga’ or `Virtual Screen’ using Oculus.

Airtel has also partnered with Nokia to demonstrate a VR-based 360 degree content like an undersea experience that can be streamed in a 5G live environment.

The former telecom market leader teamed up with Sweden’s
Ericsson to showcase autonomous drones to handle next-gen e-delivery services over 5G networks. Autonomous drones are like self-driving cars in the sky.

The use case shows how these drones can be leveraged for mission critical applications such as disaster response and monitoring emergency delivery services and remote surveillance of critical infrastructure. These self-driving drones will be able to reach locations quickly and accurately without any remote-based piloting assistance.

Such use cases would “leverage high-bandwidth and ultra-low latency of 5G networks,” Airtel said.
