NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel, which is the first company in the world to distribute Verizon’s BlueJeans service will look at areas under the strategic alliance with Verizon.

“We have been working together for many years. We respect Verizon a lot and will certainly look at areas which can add value,”
Gopal Vittal, Airtel India, and South Asia chief executive said.

The Sunil Mittal-led telco Tuesday entered into a strategic partnership with US-based telecom operator Verizon to launch a new video conferencing service,
Airtel BlueJeans for enterprises.

“We will tap small and home enterprises as well where it will be bundled with a home broadband connection. There will be several approaches that we will take to tap the full opportunity in India,” he said.

Airtel has worked closely with Verizon and BlueJeans teams to customize the product for the needs of enterprises and MSMEs in India.

Vittal said that all the data will be locally stored on Airtel data centers and cloud.

A couple of days back, Airtel’s mobile telephony rival Reliance Jio launched its own VC services – JioMeet - which is free to use.

Asked about competition, Vittal said, “We know we are not first, but we have a strong point of differentiation. We are solving security and privacy problems and are keeping the data safe. We are giving a commitment to privacy. With work from home, video collaboration is going to grow. The market is in nascent stages and penetration is low in India.”

Vittal said that customers are looking for security and ease of use when they opt for collaboration tools. “The business model has to be subscription or advertisement based. We are clear to start with businesses or enterprises. People will be willing to pay for it.”

Hans Vestberg, Chief Executive Officer of Verizon said that the company worked with BlueJeans for years before acquiring it a few months back. “Acquiring many customers in India is our aim. We have high hopes. We have a good partnership and market really needs videoconferencing.”

“We know the strengths and relationships in the enterprise space. They have a strong brand and distribution. The product is different from rivals,” Vestberg added.

Airtel’s latest offering is free to use for the first three months, and after that Airtel said it will offers “competitive pricing options.”

Analysts said that the more traditional options have taken a beating to the more user-friendly offerings like Google meet and Zoom that have gained quick share in the past six months. However, a lot of organizations continue to remain concerned about the reported security issues and have chosen options that allow them more secure access.

“This partnership between Blue jeans and Airtel is one of mutual convenience and equal contribution. While BlueJeans brings in the technology and Airtel on its part has access to customers and installed base to sell to and most importantly even the ability to use local data centers to ensure data residency requirements,” said Sanchit Vir Gogia, CEO and Founder of Greyhound.

Gogia added that while there is definitely a market for videoconferencing solutions, a large portion of land grab happened over the past 3 months wherein Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Zoom have been the favourite picks of enterprises.

Airtel said that it may explore the possibility to extend this videoconferencing service offering to African nations where it has operations. “We start in India, and can look at offering it to Africa. But, we will first see how we do in India.”
