NEW DELHI: The top three GSM operators - Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, and Idea Cellular - saw their combined revenue market share erode by 90 basis points in the July-September quarter as increases in their effective call rates drove some users, mainly rural ones, away to smaller rivals, say analysts.

Bharti
Airtel, India's largest telecom operator, reported the maximum fall of 45 basis points, while Aircel was the biggest gainer, adding 34 basis points to its revenue market share (RMS), brokerage HSBC wrote in a note to clients.

All the three telecom operators have been cleaning up the discounted minutes on their networks to achieve a better rate per minute. Consequently, Bharti recorded a 4% increase in voice realisation per minute over the last year, while Idea clocked an improvement of 8.3% due to clamping down of free minutes.

Bharti
Airtel's revenue market share at the end of the September quarter was 30.45%, followed by Vodafone's at 23.09% and Idea's at 15.87%. While Vodafone lost 31 basis points, Idea's market share came down by 33 basis points.

The top-three telecom operators have been banking on growth in the voice rates and data revenues to regain revenue market share in the successive quarters.

The trend in the second quarter also seems to be in line with the
Idea Cellular CEO Himanshu Kapania's prediction that the effective rise in tariffs would start to play out in the successive quarters.

"Essentially, the top three have kept tariffs up, while the smaller players have reduced tariff. As expected the three are focusing on quality revenue," Prashant Singhal of E&Y said, adding this was only a temporary phase.

Hemant Joshi of Deloitte Haskins and Sells attributed the dip in revenue market share to "seasonality", when the rural population makes fewer calls.

In an analysis of the telecom sector's quarterly performance,
Rajiv Sharma of HSBC has noted that "one of the reasons for the divergent RMS/traffic between incumbent and smaller players came from the meaningful rural exposure of incumbent operators".

"These results suggest that the dual SIM phenomenon is not completely over," the report added, indicating that users, mainly cost-sensitive rural ones, switch to operators offering lower call rates or more discounts the moment the one they have been using takes away call offers.

The RMS trends also seem to be broadly in line with traffic trends as smaller players recorded marginal traffic growth versus a sharp decline in minutes recorded by incumbent operators.

Bharti Airtel recorded a 3% quarter on quarter dip in voice traffic on its network, while wireless revenue for the sector declined by 1.7%.

The top three GSM operators - Bharti Airtel,
Vodafone India,
and Idea Cellular - saw their combined revenue market share erode by 90 basis
points in the July-September quarter.
["Vodafone","Anil Ambani","HSBC","Airtel","industry","Bharti Airtel","Idea Cellular","Reliance communications","Deloitte","Rajiv Sharma","Hemant Joshi","Bharti Airtel India
industry/airtel-vodafone-idea-lose-revenue-market-pie"}}" data-authors="[" anandita singh mankotia"]" data-category-name="Industry" data-category_id="18" data-date="2013-11-27" data-index="article_1">
