NEW DELHI: The Flash 2 is Alcatel<\/a>'s latest budget 4G offering for India. Right out of the box, it offers a good mix of specifications and premium design. It is a mainstream 5-inch size and the company has introduced some 'Flash Green' highlights (you'll see these on the home button and around the rear camera) signifying innovation, youth and energy.

\nThe back panel is removable though the battery is not. The default back cover is a sort of black sandstone finish (similar to OnePlus) though Alcatel has also supplied a flip case with clear window -it's a soft faux leather that feels quite premium.However, it is not a smart case (it will not switch screen on\/off) and the window serves no real purpose -but you can take calls with the flip closed.

Looking around the device, one can see it's all plastic, with a chrome ring on the frame. Power and volume are on the right side of the phone, there's a micro USB port on the lower left corner and a 3.5mm jack on top (slightly off centre). The curved back makes it quite comfortable to hold The interface is close to stock Android<\/a> with a few extra tweaks like a built in backup tool (backs up data to microSD), auto start manager and Quick Clear (free up RAM). Some of the preloaded apps include AVG antivirus, Facebook, Twitter, TouchPal key board, Weather and WhatsApp.

\nThese can also be completely removed. The only one that can't be removed is a third party app store called zApp. The screen is not a 1080p unit but it feels adequate. It can get quite bright and offers some good colours. It could do with some better viewing angles and contrast though. The company has included MiraVision technology which allows you to change picture modes (standard, vivid, custom) with an option for dynamic contrast.

\nIt's clear that Alcatel is playing up the camera features of the Flash 2. They've coined a new term Rs Mobigraphy' for the Flash 2. For starters, it has a dedicated shutter button which is rare at this price. A long press of the shutter button on the side can also be used to call up the camera.

\nThere are a bunch of scene modes (auto, night, sunset, portrait, beach, snow, sports etc) as well as adjustments like ISO, exposure compensation and white balance. You can enable capture by voice (say cheese or capture) and capture by smile.

\nThen there are camera modes like panorama, track (tracking movement), face beauty, PIP (front + rear camera capture), live photo (a short video of your subject), multi angle and HDR. As for the hardware, it uses a 13MP Samsung ISOcell sensor, phase detection AF, f2.0 lens and dual LED flash. We found that the camera app is fast and the results were mostly pleasing ­ good for the price range.

\nOverall, a good effort from Alcatel though you should also consider that Lenovo's blockbuster K3 Note is now freely available. It is priced just a bit higher (Rs 9,999) and offers a stronger processor and a larger full HD screen.
