""NEW DELHI: Jack Ma-founded Alibaba is looking to acquire an online movie booking site to up its game in India’s retail entertainment business, after investments in digital payment app Paytm, as the Chinese ecommerce major looks to expand its play in what it terms as a key market.

“Within the group-level, there is already a momentum like Paytm investment which we have done. We are also going to have some investment in online movie tickets booking sites,” Alibaba’s mobile business president
He Xiaopeng told ET Wednesday, when asked about acquisition moves in India.

Xiaopeng added that the potential acquisition target could be sites similar to
BookMyShow. He however didn’t specify if the company was in talks with any for a deal.

A recent media report had said that Alibaba Pictures, the movie and TV content business controlled by the Chinese e-commerce major, is in negotiations to buy 70-75% stake in Orbgen Technologies, which operates ticket-booking platform TicketNew, for about $35 million.

The group considers India a key market which is growing in terms of number of mobile phone users and internet users, amid slowdown in global markets.

The Chinese giant, according to the executive, is creating a strategic team to explore investment opportunities in India.

“We are forming a strategic group to look at investment strategy in India and take it as a long-term goal for considering more investments,” Xiaopeng added.

The company had acquired
UCWeb, of which He is a co-founder, in 2014 to up its game in digital play, and India has become one of the two focussed regions after China, and ahead of Indonesia.

“Our C-level team is already speaking to major venture capitalists in India for co-investment opportunities,” Xiaopeng said, adding that the company would continue its investment momentum in the country.

It is already investing Rs200 crore for developing the content ecosystem in India and Indonesia.

“We are looking at infrastructure tie-ups with partners, exploring opportunities with communications companies in India. China and India has a relationship and India is a base to our global strategy,” the Alibaba executive said.

Alibaba also feels that billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio Infocomm foray into telecom, which has led to a sharp fall in data tariff across telecom market, is a good opportunity for the company and the sector, and would help in digital payment growth in India.

It (Jio’s low data tariff) is definitely an opportunity for us and the entire
industry. Content consumption is surging vastly and is good for our operations. It is good for content portfolio and ecosystem and is also an opportunity for the digital payments segment,” Xiaopeng said.

Alibaba’s mobile business has already identified short videos as a next big thing as the entertainment content surges further.

Mark Zuckerberg-driven
Facebook has also recently shown interest in short videos.

Xiaopeng believes that Facebook cares less about content but more about communications.

“We talk more about content generation, organisation and commercialisation. In future, we will focus on content creators and help them make better content with its commercialisation. This will be our key competitive strength,” he added.

UCWeb also Wednesday said it will invest Rs 200 crore in India over the next two years for distributing content, while it will invest Rs 5 crore initially to launch a self-creating content platform We-Media Reward Plan 2.0 which will have write ups by popular bloggers and others.

“The investment falls under
Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group’s targeted investment of $7.2 billion in content over the next three years,” He added.

India has monthly active users of over 80 million on UCNews, as of February. With at least 400,000 self-publishers here, the company feels its We-Media platform, the market has the potential to propel UC News to the No. 1 position in content generation and service platforms within this year.

UCWeb is also upgrading its content and services portfolio by adding more short videos, which are fast becoming the most popular form of content consumed in China. The company sees huge potential for this concept in India as well. The company has set up a separate team to handle short videos section and is scouting for relevant partners to support this for UC News India.
