BENGALURU: Homegrown companies like Flipkart and Ola may have raised concerns over the ‘non-fair’ ways in which US companies compete with local peers, but Karnataka’s IT minister Priyank Kharge believes the government provides equal opportunity to all startups and has already ensured a level playing field.

His comments come in the backdrop of
Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal and Ola co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal’s recent statements that well-funded US-companies compete with Indian startups in a “non-fair” way by using capital to outperform their Indian counterparts.

“Personally, I would give preference to a desi startup as it is a moral responsibility to support my state’s startup. But, when you talk about equal opportunity, the government has always provided a level playing field to all.”

Talking of a level-playing field, Kharge said: “Nothing is preventing any Indian startup from raising foreign capital. There is a level playing field when it comes to access to foreign capital.”

“I agree that foreign startups which come to India have huge pockets,” adding, “the point is, competition is good because consumers benefit at the end of the day.” Speaking about the new cab aggregator policy to limit surge pricing at 4X, he said: “You cannot change something just because somebody is saying something about policy. It has to be well thought-out. You have to see the social and long-term impact of the decision.”

Commenting on data protection following the recent hacks, Kharge said, “
Cybersecurity is a grey area. Unfortunately, it is not a priority area for many governments.”

With respect to
Karnataka, Kharge is optimistic that the Centre of Excellence for Cyber security in Bengaluru will be the “solid foundation” to ensure cyber security in the state.

He said the centre will ensure that skills are bred inhouse to tackle cyber terrorism and cyber crimes in India. Asked about the Centre’s push for cashless transactions, he said although he was a supporter of a
cashless economy, the way it was being implemented was “appalling”.

Talking of a level-playing field, Kharge said: “Nothing is preventing any Indian startup from raising foreign capital.
