\nAxiata has been a strategic shareholder in Idea for nine years. Post the merger, its stake in the company will also get diluted.

“Axiata will ensure that the position of its shareholders are best addressed through, among others, any
industry<\/a> consolidation or development. At the same time, Axiata will ensure that its investment position in Idea is maximised in terms of value and liquidity,” it said in a statement.
\n
\n“The group’s assessment of its position as a minority shareholder of Idea will be an extension of Axiata’s ongoing evaluation and analysis of its investment portfolio in its entirety.”
\n
\n“Axiata’s next course of action, if any, will be based on the outcome of a comprehensive analysis based on principles that will maximise benefits to the shareholders of Axiata,” it said.

\nOn Monday, Kumar Mangalam Birla-owned Idea Cellular said its board has approved the company's merger with Vodafone India and its wholly owned subsidiary Vodafone India Mobile Services.

\nThe deal will create India's largest mobile phone company with about 400 million customers, 35% customer market share and 41% revenue market share.

\nA BOLD MOVE, SAYS COAI <\/strong>
Cellular body COAI on Monday termed the merger of Idea Cellular and Vodafone India as a “bold” move and said the combined entity will be beneficial to both the government and consumers of the Indian
telecom<\/a> market, reports PTI.
\n
\nStating that the merger will be “good” not only from an organisational perspective, but from the point of view of consumers and the government also, COAI said it hopes that the amalgamation will get “quick” clearances given the Centre's emphasis on ease of doing business.
\n
\n“It is a bold move from both the operators... and signals their intention to be long-term players in India. From the government's perspective, it will mean stability in terms of payments because it is a stronger entity that will emerge,” COAI director general Rajan Mathews said.
