NEW DELHI: For most startups these days any idea seems to be launched up as an app. While users have only 15-20 apps on their smartphones<\/a>, making it tough for new apps to get user attention. In a recent interaction with ET, Paytm<\/a> founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma<\/a> talks about what makes apps tick. \nThere's a rush to create apps. And there are already a million plus apps. While users may not be using more than a dozen apps. What makes apps attractive to users?<\/strong>

\nApps are websites of the smartphone generation. Like we have millions and millions of websites similarly world will have millions and millions of Apps. Problem is discovering them all. Unlike Web where search engines could easily browse the site and index to be searched, apps are closed systems. Apps are like closed gardens and only user and the App company know about the data inside. This is precisely the challenge which Internet age search and discovery platforms are facing.

\nWhat are the advantages of apps?<\/strong>

\nApps are superior because they leverage many more features of smartphones like gyroscope, sensors, locations and other system data. Apps can give far superior ease and consumer experience than mobile sites. That's why native apps win over mobile sites.

\nDo you believe going app only is a herd mentality driven trend and companies must also explore mobile browser<\/a> presence as well?<\/strong>

\nApp only is a business resource question for companies. Those who can, may offer both interfaces. There is no doubt that consumers prefer apps over mobile sites as it offers superior user experience leveraging lot more mobile operating system offers. For example we are able to detect fraudsters using location of login which could be tough if it was on mobile site only.

\nLogically if you still bother about 20-25 per cent users continuing usage on desktop, one will have desktop site. Today's app only rush is a bit early for India. In India high end users are yet not app exclusive.

\nI believe in long term, desktop browsers will be less than 5 per cent and just a minuscule business contributor.
