Mumbai | Bengaluru: Former Infosys<\/a> executives BG Srinivas and Ashok Vemuri are the frontrunners to be the IT company’s chief executive, even as the firm explores creating a deputy CEO role to ensure management continuity, said people with knowledge of the matter.\n
The Bengaluru-headquartered company is not having an easy time picking a new leader after former CEO Vishal Sikka<\/a> resigned in August following a bruising battle with founder NR Narayana Murthy<\/a> over corporate governance issues. Cofounder Nandan Nilekani<\/a> returned to the company as non-executive chairman to steady operations.

\nInfosys has interviewed a slew of candidates, including some executives from Oracle and Google, a top company executive said.
\n
\n“It’s not an easy task for the board. There are various ifs and buts that come up when a candidate is discussed. The problem in Infosys is that the company is seen as having multiple power centres. While Nilekani has acceptance, he is seen as a founder. The board, which was redone recently, has older and new members who have seen the turmoil over several management changes,” he said.
\n
\n“Several candidates want assurance of non-interference by the founders.” Candidates are also concerned about the reputation risks that would be involved in managing the company after Sikka faced fire for the Panaya acquisition and other operational decisions, he said.

According to an external consultant who has worked closely with Infosys for several years, Sikka was perhaps the last chance the company had of attracting outside talent for the top job. Two prospects cited promoter-interference and operational mess as reasons to not consider applying for the post of Infosys CEO<\/a>, he said.

\nThis has required Infosys to look at the Infosys alumni for potential candidates.
\n
\nSrinivas, who is group managing director at Hong Kong-listed PCCW Ltd, was a president at Infosys when he left the company in 2014 and had extensive experience in its Europe business as well as in manufacturing and engineering services.

Vemuri, who had left Infosys the previous year, had headed its business in Americas and, prior to that, its financial services and insurance vertical (the largest industry<\/a> vertical for IT services companies from India). Vemuri is now CEO of business process outsourcing firm Conduent.

\nAnother Infosys executive said the CEO candidate would have to be acceptable not just to the board and Nilekani, but also Murthy. “Ashok (Vemuri) has a good relationship with Nandan, and Murthy was always fond of BG Srinivas. Both were contenders the last time Infosys ran a CEO search but they left when they did not see a path to the top. That will also be a factor,” the executive said.

\nThe difference in their ages could also be a deciding factor, he said. Srinivas is 55 years old, and Vemuri nearly 50.

\nVemuri and Srinivas did not respond to emails seeking comment. Infosys declined to respond to ET’s questions on the CEO search process.
\n
\n“We don’t have anything additional to what we said in the Q2 results to share at this point,” an Infosys spokesperson said in an email.
\n
\nInfosys had said its CEO search would be completed in a reasonable time frame.
\n
The company is also looking at internal candidates — including interim CEO UB Pravin Rao<\/a> and presidents Mohit Joshi and Ravi Kumar S<\/a>.
\n
\n“We have also explored options to create a deputy CEO role to ensure management continuity,” the first executive quoted above said.
\n
\nImplementation is a big issue for Infosys, which is why it cannot afford to lose its current top bench of leaders. Several key positions that were under Sikka in Palo Alto have not been filled but reassigned to India.
