New Delhi: Bharti Airtel may be back in the black by the end of December, after a year of losses, driven by strong operational metrics such as average revenue per user (ARPU), which could get a further push by expected fresh tariff hikes and addition of 4G customers, said analysts.

They said the telecom operator was close to profitability at the operational level in the January-March period, when it was dragged by the exceptional charges related to statutory dues and write-down on 3G gear. Its net loss before exceptional items during the quarter stood at Rs 471 crore, down from Rs 1,181 crore a year ago.

“We expect Bharti
Airtel will be able to generate profit over two-three quarters and exit 2020 with net positive PAT (profit after tax),” said a Mumbai-based analyst, who did not wish to be identified.

The Bharti
Airtel stock closed 0.13% lower at Rs 593.30 on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Thursday, having touched an all-time high of Rs 611.70 on Wednesday after declaration of the strong quarterly numbers.

Analysts said the company’s strong India business growth was underlined by the ARPU of Rs 154, up 14% sequentially and higher than rival Reliance Jio Infocomm’s Rs 130.6, which indicates that the Sunil Mittal-run telco has a far higher proportion of top-end prepaid and post-paid users compared with its rival.

“Even if the current tariffs continue, even if there is just an upgrade and ARPU does not increase to Rs 200, it (
Bharti Airtel) will still turn profitable in FY21,” Kunal Vora, telecom analyst at BNP Paribas, told ET.

Axis Capital said an increase in ARPU for Bharti Airtel is expected in the short term owing to the full impact of the increase in tariffs in December 2019, more conversions to 4G, post-paid gaining traction and churn likely in low ARPU customers.

“Even if we keep aside TRAI’s decision on floor price, Airtel’s ARPU can reach Rs 165-170 organically over the next three quarters,” said Rohan Dhamija, head of India and Middle East at Analysys Mason.

As of March end, half of Airtel’s 283 million subscribers were 4G users. The telco’s average data usage per user at 15 GB and voice minutes per user at 989 minutes were also way ahead of rivals.

Analysts said the lockdown presented an opportunity to the telco to grow its non-mobile service segment, especially home broadband.

“The fact that mobile broadband tariffs are higher now, and more consumers need a stable connection when they stay at home, the opportunity to add new fixed broadband consumers and upgrade existing consumers is likely to increase,” said Vora.

The company has more than 160 million monthly active users across its digital assets, more than 1.1 million retailers are transacting on its Mitra App and more than 60% of the business is going through digital channels, Bharti Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal had said in an earnings call.

Morgan Stanley said the telco is “confident about driving growth in home broadband, enterprise business (data centres, IoT, cloud, managed services), digital platforms (such as
Airtel Thanks, Wynk and Xstream) and payments/location based services”.
