NEW DELHI: Bharti-backed OneWeb will launch 36 new satellites from Sriharikota, India, to achieve 70% deployment of its planned in-orbit low-earth orbit (LEO) constellation of 648 satellites after the company had suspended launches from a key cosmodrome in Kazakhstan amid the Russia-Ukraine war.

“OneWeb today announced the arrival of 36 satellites at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in advance of a planned launch from Sriharikota, India,” the
satellite communication (satcom) company said in a statement on Tuesday.

The announcement follows the satcom company’s pact with
NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to use the Indian-built PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and the heavier GSLV-MkIII (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) as potential platforms to launch OneWeb’s satellites in India from 2022.

The new launch will be OneWeb’s 14th overall and the satellites will be put into orbit by the GSLV-MkIII rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the statement added. Another launch is planned this year, while three more are targeted for early next year to complete the constellation.

“With many thanks to our top-of-the line partners ISRO and NSIL, as well as our shareholder
Bharti Global for their continued stewardship, we were able to facilitate this upcoming pioneering launch in Sriharikota India,” said OneWeb CEO Neil Masterson.

“Undertaking the launch of 36
OneWeb satellites on-board GSLV-MkIII from India is a historic moment for NSIL and ISRO. We are excited to see the arrival of the satellites and the Ground Support Equipment in India in preparation for the launch,” said Radhakrishnan D, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, NewSpace India Limited
