As per the latest regulatory disclosures to the Registrar of Companies (RoC), Sony India sales went up by 14% to Rs 5,161 crore while profit too improved by 37% to Rs 103 crore in FY22.
The Japanese company's sales were on a decline for the last few years in India after Sony globally exited from laptop and mobile phone businesses, which were high-volume drivers in the country, followed by a price war in televisions by Chinese brands. At its peak, Sony India's revenue was over Rs 11,000 crore in FY15.
Sony India in the filings said the \"business increased significantly in the television category with premium high-end large screen TVs<\/a>, which contributed well to the value growth\" driven by OTT penetration during the lockdown and \"historic growth\" of 50% in gaming console sales and 100% in software and periphery business due to lockdown and launch of the new console, PS5.
Mohit Yadav, founder of business intelligence firm Altinfo<\/a>, said the growth in Sony's profitability last fiscal with premium products, it seems the company has finally figured out how to come out on top of the Covid impact.
Sony India managing director Sunil Nayyar<\/a> told ET while OTT changed entertainment to large screen televisions of 55 to 85 inches, which is continuing in India as one of the few global markets, the demand for the PS5 gaming console was more than the supplies even now.
\"The growth more than doubled for cameras due to weddings, fashion and wildlife photography. Sales of headphones and soundbars too jumped. This is a new Sony India considering the way we were subjected to price war by Chinese brands and exit from few categories,\" said Nayyar<\/a>.
Sony in the filings said supplies of car audio and digital cameras were impacted due to semiconductor shortages and China lockdowns, though it managed to cater to the demand. It said the company's financial standing and cash flow situation improved in FY22 when compared with the previous fiscal.
