Representative image.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>Edinburgh: A break in an undersea cable<\/a> cut off mobile networks and internet communications to Scotland's remote oil-rich Shetland Islands Thursday, with telecommunications company BT<\/a> declaring \"a major incident\".

Homes and businesses on the island archipelago, which has a population of just under 23,000 and is 210 km (130 miles) northeast of the British mainland, had access cut overnight to most communication networks.

\"Due to a break in a third-party subsea cable connecting Shetland with the Scottish mainland, some phone, broadband and mobile services are affected,\" a BT<\/a> spokesperson said in a statement.

\"Engineers are working to divert services via other routes as soon as possible and we'll provide further updates. Our external subsea provider is also looking to restore their link quickly.\"

The Shetland Islands are connected with the mainland via the SHEFA2 fibre optic submarine cable that also links the Faroe Islands and Orkney Islands to Scotland. The cable was deployed in 2007.

Repairs to another cable that connects the Shetland Islands and Faroe Islands are underway after it was damaged last week. This cable is expected to be repaired on Saturday.

Police on the island have requested island residents to avoid making non-urgent calls.

\"We are advising people not to make non-urgent calls for the time being so that all available lines can be used for emergencies if required,\" Superintendent David Ross said.
