More than half the staffers at BSNL’s Nagpur office have opted for VRS, and their exit was slated for January 31. As February began with a severe manpower crunch, a number of the retired employees have agreed to continue till BSNL makes alternative arrangements. They are offering their services without any remuneration, even as the salary of last two months is still pending. The trend has been seen at other centres too, said officials here.
“Before the VRS, BSNL had 94l employees at Nagpur, out of which 541 have opted for the early retirement scheme. Among these, nearly 20% have come back to work. They are doing it without any salary,” said Arvind Patil, BSNL’s general manager here.
Appeals had been made to the outgoing staffers to continue for some days so that smooth operations could continue, and they have responded, he said.
At the Customer Service Centre (CSC) here, Aparna Dongre patiently explains to a visitor the procedure to terminate a connection, as another waits in the queue. “I have retired but still offer my services part time so that the work here is not hampered. But there are others who have simply continued on full-time basis,” she says.
“There were 11 staffers at the CSC but only two are left now. With no other arrangements, there was no choice but to request the retirees to continue. We have no authority over them now, yet they are continuing to work as before,” said a in-charge there.
At the welfare section, Neelkanth Atakre, who has himself retired, is busy scrutinizing documents of his ex-colleagues. “If I go away, who would process the retirement papers of others,” he says.
BSNL had earlier promised to clear the December salary on January 15, then extended the date to February 5. Now, December and January salaries are pending. For the retired, the pension may take 2-3 months to begin, after the paperwork is completed, said sources.
