It is planning to rent out some of its sprawling telephone exchanges<\/a> and vacant staff quarters in 153 locations across Kerala. The idea is to mop up at least Rs 10 crore by renting out around 12,000 sqm of built-up area in the next three years.

Government agencies<\/a>, banks etc will get priority while leasing out the space.The rent period will be three years and it can be renewed for two more terms of the same duration. “It is as part of an all-India plan that we started measures to rent out our vacant buildings and quarters. We have just started the process,“ said Sanjay Kumar, general manager, land and buildings, BSNL, Thiruvananthapuram.

Many employees quarters are vacant. “There was about 30% dip in our staff strength<\/a> in the past two or three years and another 30% decrease is expected in the next couple of years\", a BSNL official said.
