NEW DELHI: The ambitious Digital India programme, an integral plank of Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s government, was \u201cmaking good progress\u201d, said the Finance Minister on Saturday.

\nAn overall sum of Rs 2,510 crore has been set aside in the budget for 2015-16 under the head \u201cDigital India Programme and Telecommunications and Electronic Industries\u201d.

\nDigital India is a Rs 1.13-lakh crore government initiative that seeks to transform the country into a connected economy, attract investment in electronics manufacturing, and create millions of jobs and support trade.
\n
\n\u201cThe National Optical Fibre Network Programme (NOFNP) of 7.5 lakh kms, networking 2.5 lakh villages is being further speeded up by allowing willing States to undertake its execution, on reimbursement of cost as determined by Department of Telecommunications,\u201d Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said while presenting the Budget for 2015-16.

\nAndhra Pradesh is the first State to have opted for this manner of implementation, he added.
\n
\nThe budget introduced several measures that involve the use of technology, such central excise and service tax assesses to be allowed to use digitally signed invoices and maintaining electronic records.
\n
\nHowever, no mention was made on Saturday of the ambitious smart cities project, which had a budgetary allotment of Rs 7,000 crore last year.

\nIn a document detailing the status of implementation of budgetary announcements made last year, the government said action was being taken with respect to each component planned under Digital India, and marked the status as \u201cAction partially completed\u201d.
