<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>Pune\/Mumbai\/Chennai: The unprecedented focus on use of technology in every facet of governance, underlined by the Union Budget 2022-23<\/a>, will provide a significant leg up to the business opportunities for domestic as well as multinational technology firms.

Start-ups working in the area of new age technology platforms such as drones, space imagery and artificial intelligence, will specifically stand out to gain the most from this massive push towards digitisation, say industry executives and experts.

Nirmala Sitharaman<\/a> on Tuesday proposed several initiatives – all with a key pivot of technology – be it the area of skilling, agriculture, education, mental health, logistics or bolstering small and medium enterprises.

IT industry body
Nasscom<\/a> said that the Budget is betting big on technology and it will help in shaping this decade as the decade of technology in India -- being termed as a \"Techade\".

“Digital and IT have been given a central place in the Budget. It is one of the four pillars of governance. Be it logistics, health, education, language translation, IT has been given an important place,\" Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister for electronics and IT, said at a briefing.

Rajesh Gopinathan, managing director at
Tata Consultancy Services<\/a> (TCS), said that the Budget provides many growth opportunities for the technology industry across sectors such as railways, healthcare, education, financial services, and regulatory bodies, which will accelerate India's growth.

“The decision to introduce E-Passport will further streamline the overall citizen experience, enhance security, and facilitate smoother international travel,” said Gopinathan. The country’s largest software services firm TCS last month won the second phase of the ministry of external affairs' Passport Seva Programme worth Rs 8,000 crore.

Experts pointed out that the government's digital push would in turn lead to more IT and technology projects being awarded, benefiting Indian and global technology companies.

“If you start reading the indicators – be it the investment in STEM, R&D, innovation, digital currency and blockchain – it underscores that India's position as a technology powerhouse will depend upon its dominance on technology, CP Gurnani, managing director of
Tech Mahindra<\/a> told ET. “We will be a powerful nation because we are not only 5G enabled, but the broad spectrum of the country is technology enabled”.

The government also announced a big thrust towards using drones and start-ups will be encouraged to launch a ‘Drone Shakti’ project to facilitate drone usage through varied applications and also allow for usage of drones “as a service”. Sitharaman also announced use of drones by farmers for land surveying, spraying of insecticides and along with digitisation of land records.

“It (the Budget) is focused on providing India with a strong foundation for the techade and establishing it as a global hub in terms of technology innovation,” Nasscom said in a statement.

It however pointed out that certain aspects were left unaddressed such as additional focus on industry led R&D in emerging technologies, enabling clarifications to allow units in special economic zones (SEZs) flexibility to adopt hybrid work model, easing the taxation of ESOP by making the taxation regime available to all DPIIT recognized start-ups and taxing employees only when they sell the shares.

It is crucial that the existing tax holidays should not be adversely impacted by the remote working model,” said Keshav Murugesh, CEO of WNS Global Services<\/a> adding that the Union Budget 2022-23 is a “visionary budget” paving way for a self-reliant India with its long-term vision for India in the 100th year of independence.

While recognising that the pandemic had had an impact on learning and education across the country, the FM has proposed creating high quality e-content in all spoken languages for delivery via internet to mobile phones, TV and radio. The FM also said that artificial Intelligence, geospatial systems and drones, semiconductor and space imaging, genomics and green energy and clean mobility systems have immense potential to assess sustainable development at scale and modernize the country.

Kazim Rizvi, founding director of The Dialogue said that it is clear that with the budget announcement, the government has focused on building the techology economy and integrating it with the infrastructure ecosystem and the basic engine of economic growth.

“This will help in the growth of startups and will also provide more business to the IT sector, along with enhancing the role of tech towards driving the future of India's economic growth,” he said.
