Cook said the Cupertino, California-based company was investing a “ton of energy” on retail, manufacturing and R&D in the third-largest market for smartphones after China and the US. While the iPhone maker has a 2% share in India’s smartphone market, it has 43% in the premium segment — phones priced Rs 30,000 and above — trailing leader Samsung<\/a> Electronics, according to Counterpoint Technology Market Research.

\n“We agree that we are underpenetrated there. Our growth rates are good, really good by most people’s expectations, maybe not mine as much. So we’re putting a lot of energy in, just like we have in other geos (geographies) that eventually wound up producing more and more,” Cook told analysts on an earnings call early Wednesday. He said Apple had set a new March quarter record for India, where it strengthened its local presence.

\n“We’re very optimistic about our future in this remarkable country with its very large, young and tech-savvy population, fast-growing economy and improving 4G network infrastructure,” Cook said.

\nChief financial officer Luca Maestri said the company achieved $52.9 billion in revenue for the quarter, up 4.6% on year. Growth exceeded 20% in India, the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe and Brazil. Net profit rose to $11.03 billion from $10.52 billion a year ago.

\nApple, a late starter in India, has upped its game in the world’s fastest-growing smartphone market as markets such as China slow down. The company opened an app development centre in Bengaluru and a development centre for Apple Maps in Hyderabad with an investment of $25 million.

\nThe US giant is on the verge of assembling its iPhone SE on the outskirts of Bengaluru through Taiwanese contract manufacturer Wistron — which would be expanded eventually to all phones — and may set up its online store this year. Apple’s challenge in India is price, with over 70% of phones sold costing less than $100.

\nThe iPhone maker is conscious about not lowering its average selling price, which was over $650, especially during falling sales, said analysts. The average selling price in India was $560 in the March quarter. About 6,80,000 to 7,00,000 iPhones were sold in the quarter ended March in India.

\n“It sold 2.5 million iPhones in India in the year ended September 2016 — less than what some companies sell in a quarter — and is expected to sell 3.5 million this year,” said Counterpoint.

\n“Apple needs to keep in mind the growing middle-class segment that aspires for Apple but seeks value. Hence, older generation iPhones at lower prices help, and it can keep doing that. Additionally, possibly price adjustments due to cost saving because of planned India manufacturing can help lower prices,” said Navkendar Singh, senior analyst at IDC India.

\nThe mid-segment — devices priced above $250 (Rs 16,000) — accounts for less than 20% of India’s 300 million smartphone users and holds potential for Apple.
\n
\n“With mid-segment likely to grow in coming quarters, Apple can target this 50 million user base in the near term whose next purchase is likely to overlap with Apple’s offering in India,” said Tarun Pathak, associate director at Counterpoint.
\n
“How soon Apple bridges the affordability vs aspirational gap before other competitors like Oppo<\/a>, Vivo<\/a>, Gionee<\/a>, Samsung and Oneplus start targeting their user base to upgrade will be the key.”
\n
\nCook said Apple is investing aggressively in India. “So we’re bringing all the things that we brought to bear in other markets that we’ve eventually done well in and that’s from channel to stores to our ecosystem and so forth,” he said.

\nThe fast pace of 4G network rollouts and investments in India, which Cook said he had not seen in any other country in the world, provided a huge opportunity for Apple.
