Chennai: The competition in broadband services market in Tamil Nadu is heating up with a company run by cable TV operators now entering the segment hitherto dominated by corporates.

On Friday, Thamizhaga Cable TV Communication Private Limited (TCCL), a multi-system operator (MSO) run by cable TV operators launched its Thamizhaga Internet Communications Private Limited ('TIC Fiber') broadband service.

Nagamanickam I, Director, TCCL, says they already have around 10,000 subscribers for their broadband internet service and they will also offer IPTV and other value added services in the near future.

Last year, the TN government too launched its 'affordable' broadband service - 'Arasu Fibre' - through the state-owned Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV).

As of now, organisations such as BSNL, Airtel, RailTel Corporation, ACT and Hathway offer broadband services in the state. TACTV, which received Internet Service Provider (ISP) licence from the Union ministry of communications and IT in 2015, offers the service through cable operators who have signed up with them.

Last year, the TN government also announced that it would offer free Wi-Fi facilities in 50 locations such as large bus terminuses, parks and public spaces, and free internet access for higher secondary school and college students.

Though TACTV was set up to eliminate monopoly in cable TV distribution in the state, many cable operators have moved away from it, after protesting against the state-run MSO allegedly charging higher subscription fees and increasing subscribers without notice.

Now, around 23,000 operators, out of around 29,000 operators state-wide are with TCCL. The delay in Arasu Cable getting the Digital Addressable System (DAS) licence was another reason for the move. The DAS licence is required for cable operators to provide digital signals, which the ministry of information and broadcasting has made mandatory for MSOs.

Last month, TACTV told broadcasters and MSOs not to disconnect signals and warned it would initiate contempt proceedings as the issue of DAS licence to TN is sub judice.

/news/visa-mastercard-lobby-government-to-ensure-they-dont-lose-out-to-homegrown-apps-like-upi-bhim/58190400
The competition in broadband services market in Tamil Nadu is heating up with a company run by cable TV operators now entering the segment hitherto dominated by corporates.
["act","Airtel","BSNL","Cable TV","Hathway","3G/4G","raitel","Arasu Fibre","TIC Fiber
telecomnews/cable-tv-operators-tap-broadband-market-in-tamil-nadu"}}" data-authors="[" "]" data-category-name="" data-category_id="" data-date="2017-04-15" data-index="article_1">
