PUNE: Indian businesses and media houses could be under attack by Chinese state sponsored hacker groups according to chatter uncovered on the dark web. In the last 10 days, there has been extended conversations in the Chinese hacking communities discussing ways to ‘teach India a lesson’, according to Cyfirma, a Singapore-headquartered cyber security firm. It said that the hackers expressed frustration with India, using statements like “this is one nation who doesn’t listen to us”.

According to Cyfirma, there are plans afoot to try and steal sensitive data, denial of service or deface websites or launching malicious
phishing campaigns targeting Indian government websites and corporates in the telecommunications, pharma, smartphone and construction industries.

The report said that companies like Jio, Airtel, L&T, ApolloTyres, Micromax and Cipla could be targeted, along with the Defence, Foreign Affairs and Information and Broadcasting ministries. ET has emailed the companies mentioned in the report and CERT-In.

The increased activity seen on chat groups in the last ten days has been attributed to the current border tensions between the two countries. “The whisperings in the dark web and hackers’ forums have increased in volume and intensity with actual mentions of Indian targets. When we observed that IoCs (indicators of compromise) were shared, we immediately knew that the threat could be imminent. The course of action now for these companies and government bodies is to quickly close those security gaps and vulnerabilities,: said Kumar Ritesh, Founder CEO, Cyfirma. He said that they had alerted the organisations mentioned in these chats, as well as the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team CERT-In.

Based on the analysis of the IP addresses shared in the hackers conversation, the firm said that Chinese threat actor groups Gothic Panda and Stone Panda were behind these potential hacking campaigns, These groups are closely associated with the Chinese Government, he said.

Gothic Panda has been responsible for campaigns like Operation Clandestine Fox, Operation Clandestine Wolf, and Operation Double Tap in the past. Stone Panda has traditionally shown interest in stealing international trade secrets and supply chain information from enterprises in countries including India, USA, Japan, Canada and Brazil.
