New Delhi: Smartphone brand Honor, a former sub-brand of Huawei, denied a Chinese media report that it is quitting the India market, and said it is maintaining business operations in the country. “荣誉是维护经营[s]在印度,将继续发展。早期的新闻报道,“荣誉正乐动扑克式宣布退出印度市场的是不正确的,”一个荣誉的全球发言人星期一告诉ET在一封电子邮件。 新德里:智能手机品牌荣誉前子品牌华为否认中国媒体报导说,退出印度市场,并说这是保持业务操作。
"Honor is maintaining business operation[s] in India and will continue its development. The earlier news report that 'Honor officially announces its exit from the Indian market' is not correct,” an Honour global spokesperson told ET on an email Monday.
A media report had quoted CEO Zhao Ming as saying that the smartphone brand Honor, has officially exited the India market, for "obvious reasons".
Honor however seems to have stopped promoting its products in India since last year. The last tweet on its Twitter profile was posted in 2021 on the occasion of Holi.
The company, then a subsidiary of Huawei Technologies, was hit hard by the US sanctions in 2019, limiting their access to crucial components and software. As a result, both Huawei and Honor phones could not have support for Google services, a crucial element in Android smartphones that gives access to apps like Gmail, Google Maps, etc.
Honor was then sold off by Huawei to a Chinese-government backed consortium, after which the brand has bounced back in China, capturing the second spot with 18.2% market share in Q1 2022, according to research firm, IDC.
However, the brand fell off the charts in India after the US sanctions. It held a 3% market share in India at its peak in 2018.
The development comes amidst intense scrutiny of Chinese entities by New Delhi into their operations and financials amid continuing border tensions between the neighbouring nations. Chinese smartphone brands Xiaomi, Huawei, Vivo and Oppo have come under the radar of investigating agencies this year, over alleged irregularities in their operations.
