Fifth generation (5G) telecom technology is a big opportunity for Cisco and the most exciting tech-led programme adopted by India, said Daisy Chittilapilly, president of Cisco India and SAARC, on Tuesday.
Chittilapilly told ET that the government had massive technology-led programmes, including BharatNet, wi-fi for citizens and defence modernisation projects, and that the country was now onboarding 5G technology.
“That (5G) is a big opportunity for Cisco as well because that is the space in which we lead worldwide. And there are also emerging opportunities like the digitization of India across sectors, which is also a massive opportunity in which our technology can come to play and make a huge difference in these sectors,” she said.
Cisco, she added, was looking to redefine the next phase of its journey in the country, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic has created a huge opportunity by fast-tracking key digital and digitization initiatives.
“It will forever change the way we interact as individuals, the way businesses conduct themselves, and the way governments govern,” she said. “We used to think about technology as an enabler, then it became an accelerator, and now we live in a post-Covid world, where technology is the disrupter, it's a boardroom conversation that we care about.”
Chittilapilly said that while cybersecurity had always been a concern, it had assumed even more significance with people and businesses being dispersed geographically.
Cisco has a role to play in ensuring both application experience as well as user experience of applications when brands elevate their apps, she said.
“Securing businesses has again become a board-level agenda,” she said. “And in a world where most businesses use an app to speak for their brand, we are in very topical times in terms of super apps being built in the country. In a world where an app defines the brand experience, there is a lot to be said about the re-imagination of applications in every business.”
Chittilapilly also said that while the average attrition rate for IT service providers stands at around 30%, Cisco's attrition is "much lesser than that" as it is a largely innovation-based, R&D-based set up in India.
She cited a report by Nasscom-Zinnov that projected India to face a shortage of 1.4-1.9 million tech professionals by 2026 and said it was clear that there was a gap in the overall talent ecosystem around digital skills, particularly new-age digital technologies. However, Cisco is looking to stem it by deploying an innovation-led talent attraction strategy, she added.
“We have been a bedrock of innovation. We spend a massive amount of money on R&D - almost $6 billion goes into R&D to do both internal innovations as well as buying innovation," she said. "So, there is an innovation-led talent attraction strategy, which has been front and centre for Cisco always, and it is no different now."
Flexibility has always been the ethos of working at Cisco, she added.
“We have put hybrid work in our future, but we have already been practicing hybrid work even before the pandemic," Chittilapilly said. "We have been a brand that stands for flexibility and leading with flexible work practices.”
