The government received bids amounting to a total of Rs 149.454 crore at the end of ninth round on Wednesday.
“Today, a confidence has been generated in the telecom sector,” Vaishnaw said, adding, "the telecom sector is seen as a sunrise industry, and much of the legacy issues are behind us now."
"We have got very good response across all bands. There have been good responses in the low band, mid-band, as well as in the millimeter wave band. The complete spectrum has been taken by the operators and we are very happy to see a very good response in the 700 MHz band," he said.
Vaishnav further said that the 700 MHz is very important for the far flung areas of rural India, and in all those places, the coverage is very important. "To get good coverage, you need a lower band. So the lower band of 700 MHz, which was never sold in the past, has been sold this time. We are confident that this will provide a very high quality of service to the far flung areas of our country."
Now, there is competition in the 700 Mhz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz, 3300 MHz and 26 GHz band. There is good competition almost across the table, he added.
The minister also said that the healthy infusion of technology, good infusion of capital, substantial increase in the availability of spectrum are the things needed for providing good quality service to 144 crore Indians, and that kind of ecosystem has got developed.
"I'm very happy to say that almost all the operators are seriously looking at Make-In-India telecom equipment and Make-In-India 4G and 5G network solutions. My personal opinion is that's a bigger achievement compared to the auction amount. It's very important that in our country, we should be using our own 4G and 5G technology stack and taking it to the world."
The availability of ample spectrum among operators will address service quality issues, the minister said, adding that the demand is now spreading to various geographies.
Vaishnaw said that before the end of this year, fifth generation or 5G services would be rolled out in the country.
The incremental bids in multiple circles in some circles have kept the auction rolling even after two days.
On day one, the government netted around Rs1.45 lakh crore, driven by the 700 MHz band which saw bidding for the first time, along with strong interest in the mid-band (3.3-3.67 GHz) and high-band (26 GHz) airwaves. All bids were at base price.
Incumbents such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are said to have bid for mid- and high-band airwaves as they set the stage to launch services which can offer 10 times higher mobile internet speeds than 4G, industry executives and government officials said.
Mumbai-based Jio is said to have bid for the 700 Mhz band.
New entrant Adani Data Networks, a unit of the diversified Adani Group, is expected to have put in bids only for the high band, also known as the millimetre wave (mmWave), for use in its captive networks.
