\"Coronavirus:<\/figure> NEW DELHI: The state-controlled Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL<\/a>) has finally cleared February wages to its 90,000-strong workforce amid the Coronavirus<\/a> or Covid-19 outbreak and the country's 21-day lockdown.

\"BSNL has disbursed February salary early this week. Our staff is currently working and taking all steps to keep the network up and running during the current epidemic crisis,\" a telco official on anonymity told ETT.

For the first time in February 2019, the company had delayed the salary by more than a week.

<\/div><\/div>India's fourth-largest telco that has been paying delayed wages to its regular workforce following shrinking revenue and low collection from enterprise customers, is though aiming to pay out March remuneration timely or lastest by April's first week.

Meanwhile, the finance ministry in a notification to all departments said that salaries of contract workers associated with would not be deducted if they were forced to stay at home during the Coronavirus pandemic.

However, BSNL's 70,000 strong contract workers have not been paid for months.

Query to BSNL did not elicit any response.

On Monday, in a televised address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> ordered a national lockdown and suggested people not to panic, as well as advised the corporate sector to not deduct the wages of their workforce on the back of health crisis worldwide.

The state-owned telco is currently implementing the Cabinet-approved revival package that includes a slew of initiatives to turn a corner. More than 78,000 employees opted for the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) cutting the company's headcount to almost half.

<\/div><\/div>BSNL that had the revenue to wage ratio of 75%, is now saving nearly Rs 600 crore a month or about Rs 7,000 crore annually on account of reduced manpower.

Earlier, BSNL chairman Pravin Kumar Purwar told ETT that the service provider was saving up to 50% on employee cost, and in February and March combined during the current fiscal, it could be able to save nearly Rs 1,300 crore.

VRS, allocation of fourth-generation (4G) airwaves and asset monetisation were some of the key rescue measures approved by the Modi-headed National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in October 2019.
