In a letter to Modi, seen by ETT, the Confederation of All India Traders (Cait) on Sunday said that in view of the unprecedented success of Janta curfew today having voluntary participation of the people is a testimony that citizens are prepared and a national lockdown till March 31 to prevent community transmission of Coronavirus.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has already declared Covid-19 as a pandemic that has led to the deaths of nearly 13,000 people worldwide. The WHO has also cautioned the countries to take precautionary measures.
In view of the advisories and public safety, Modi in a national address on Thursday asked countrymen to follow Janta curfew, a voluntary self-isolation that could effectively prevent transmission.
The Delhi-based group also said that in view of the epidemic, the Centre should take steps to protect the economy as well as liabilities and filing of returns under the income tax and GST regime, and that should be postponed till mid of the current year.
\"We are also in the view that the current financial year should be extended up to April 30, 2020. In addition, the government should provide subsidy to traders for awarding wages to their employees during the lockdown period,\" Cait secretary-general Praveen Khandelwal said.
Cait's comments have come on the backdrop of Modi's suggestion to corporates and businesses to allow wages to their employees following situations such as lockdown and work from home.
Meanwhile, the Indian Railways has suspended all trains until March 31 in order to check community transmission. In India, six people have died of Coronavirus.
More than 6 million traders across nearly 60,000 commercial markets with about 40 crore employees put down shutters to observe Janta curfew on Sunday.
