WhatsApp said this feature has been introduced to curb the spread of misinformation amid the Covid-19 or coronavirus pandemic.
The new feature displays a magnifying glass icon next to these frequently forwarded messages and enables the users to search the messages on the web.
Last year in January WhatsApp set global limits in forwarded messages to contain the spread of viral messages.
WhatsApp claimed this led to a 25% decrease in message forwards globally at the time.
“We ban two million accounts per month for attempting to send bulk or automated messages. We published a white paper on the impact of these efforts,” the company said in a statement.
WhatsApp recently announced the Coronavirus information hub which has been launched in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and UNDP.
“Specifically for India, we announced the MyGov Corona Helpdesk on WhatsApp in partnership with the Government of India,” the company added.
Furthermore, WhatsApp said it is working directly with NGOs and governments, including the World Health Organization and over 20 national health ministries, to help connect people with accurate information.
The instant messaging giant said these trusted authorities have sent hundreds of millions of messages directly to people requesting information and advice.
Additionally, last year WhatsApp also introduced the concept of messages that have been forwarded multiple times, labelled with double arrows at the top.
“In effect, these messages are less personal compared to typical messages sent on WhatsApp,” the company said.
