\"\"US-based cloud delivery company Akamai Technologies<\/a> feels that the stakeholders should look at all alternative means to bridge India’s digital divide. Akamai<\/a> Technologies India managing director Sidharth Malik<\/a><\/strong> in an interaction with ETTelecom’s Muntazir Abbas said that the telcos move to offer affordable broadband services would play a constructive role in India’s economic growth. \nAre you currently working with the government or other stakeholders for Digital India<\/a> initiative?<\/strong>
\n
\nCurrently we are at a discussion stage. We work with all the stakeholders, wherever we feel that we can add value to the Digital India<\/a> initiatives, be it securing or accelerating certain government sites or certain workloads which are important to the citizens of India. For that matter, we are also working closely with those involved in making policy decisions to ensure that the right kind of experience is brought to the citizens of India.

\nFew states are setting up cyber coordination cells. What is the role you are playing there?<\/strong>
\n
\nSome of the state governments are looking at us from an advisory kind of role to help them on how to set up security command centers and in terms of building an infrastructure which would be fast, reliable and secure.
\n
\nHow robust is the role of cybersecurity<\/a>, in a country like India which is moving towards a less cash economy?<\/strong>
\n
\nIt is very important. I think irrespective of whether we are moving to a less cash economy or whether we are doing transaction in the traditional way, I think one thing that we need to accept is that the penetration of internet is increasing, more number of people are coming on to the internet and I believe that as long as that is happening, more businesses are moving to the internet. So wherever there is internet in a central theme, security will play a very critical role, because one can’t want business to be impacted. This could not only be as a direct target, but also as a part of the collateral damage being done to somebody else. So I think security has to play a very critical role. In fact, the challenges in terms of how to make internet more secure are much more paramount today than anything else.

\nWith the entry of a new player Reliance Jio, the average price has come down? Do you think that this is a move in the right direction by all the telcos?<\/strong>
\n
\nI think this is a right move, because if broadband prices are coming down, you’ll have more number of users accessing the internet thereby ensuring that whatever transactions they have to do are done using the internet. Like we discussed today, internet is the central theme around which businesses are being built today. And if you have more number of users accessing the internet at the right prices, you will have more efficiencies coming into the system, into processes, where they will be able to impact the economy of the nation in a positive way. So I think it’s a very positive move by all telcos.

\nAccording to you, what should telcos do to further penetrate into rural India?<\/strong>
\n
I think it’s just not about telcos but all parties and stakeholders that are involved need to come together and have a singular vision about it. Be it companies like Akamai<\/a>, be it telcos, be it government or broadband providers, I think they all need to have a holistic view about bringing internet to the rural India. The government is definitely playing an important and positive role here. I think we see the internet penetration increasing in India the years, but we definitely want it to happen at a faster speed. I also believe that there is a lot of infrastructure which is already available and how do we consume those resources available today such as one laid by RailTel<\/a>.
\n
\nDo you think alternative mechanisms such as Google<\/a>’s project Loon, Facebook<\/a>’s Aquila and RailTel<\/a>’s broadband can help in bridging digital divide?<\/strong>
\n
\nI think we need to look at all options available. As we know that India is a mobile first country. We didn’t see the wire telephony revolution in India at all. We moved directly to mobile phones. We need to build infrastructure to provide broadband to rural India. It is a very daunting task, so my suggestion to every stakeholder is that we should look at whatever options to increase broadband and reduce costs. It could be balloons or satellites, anything that makes it easier for us.

\nHow much have you invested till now?<\/strong>

\nI won’t be able to share the dollar value. But what I can tell you is that, we started in 2005 as 35 people and today we are 1800 people, spread across various functions.
