Despite a dip in overall hiring, demand for cloud technology talent is at an all-time high, a trend accelerated due to the pandemic. The ongoing second wave of Covid-19 cases is only amplifying this demand, pushing salaries by as much as 100%, as more businesses seek to move to cloud platforms.

A person with one or more skills on the cloud with five years of experience, and drawing Rs 15 lakh per annum a year ago, is now being offered Rs 30 lakh. A mid-level executive with skills in cloud and work experience of up to 10 years is now getting job offers of about a crore compared with Rs 40-50 lakh per annum, according to a survey conducted by
Xpheno.

There is currently a talent shortage of 80% in the cloud space kicked off by the pandemic, the survey states. “The over twofold increase in job openings and remuneration packages has literally been a 'cloudburst' for talent in the cloud computing space. Candidates with niche cloud skillsets are all set for a bountiful harvest in the year ahead,” Xpheno co-founder
Kamal Karanth said.

According to the survey, there were 70,000 job openings in this space in the January-March quarter of 2021, compared with 20,000 in the same quarter last year. Last month alone, there were 17,300 new openings. “The impact of Covid-19 has put companies on the fast track to the cloud to help them achieve the speed and agility critical to meeting new challenges and seizing new opportunities,” said Mahesh Zurale, senior managing director, lead – advanced technology centres in India, Accenture.

Accenture invests $1 billion globally each year in learning and development for its workforce and has recently skilled more than 43,000 people in the cloud. In addition to skilling its own people, the company is also hiring and investing in acquisitions to bring more experts across a range of cloud skills. Staffing firm Quess is working on 3,000 searches for cloud talent, almost a fourfold increase from last year.

“The resurgence of the virus will accelerate the movement to cloud, as organisations will want to achieve scalability and security as they continue to operate remotely for the near future,” said Vijay Sivaram, CEO of Quess-IT Staffing. There is a paucity of cloud architects pool, cloud delivery teams, project managers or scrum masters and talent to contextualise data and insights, said
Genpact chief digital officer Sanjay Srivastava.

As digital transformation has accelerated, the cloud has allowed enterprises to quickly bring in new business functionality to address the new normal. “This has led to a huge spike in demand for talent, which is outweighing the current supply,” said Srivastava. Recruitment services firm
ABC Consultants is currently working on at least 10 searches with pay packets upwards of Rs 1.5 crore a year for leadership roles. “There is a surge in leadership hiring in the last two months. In the last month or so, we have placed more than half a dozen executives at leadership levels, drawing salaries over Rs 1.5 crore per annum,” said Ratna Gupta, senior director, ABC Consultants.

According to recruiters, organisations are going out of the way to offer unique compensation structures for the right candidates. While the overall IT spend dropped by 10% in 2020, the budget on cloud went up by 35%, according to Manu Saigal, director, general staffing, at
