Xiaomi India president Muralikrishnan B at the sixth-edition of the ETTelecom 5G Congress 2023.

Xiaomi India president Muralikrishnan B said that 2022 was a brutal year for the smartphone industry in the country and the volume is unlikely to grow in 2023. However, he believes that the market will grow in terms of value as the average selling price is increasing every quarter. In an interaction with ET’s Danish Khan, he said that 5G shipments as a percentage of the total market will get to the majority by Q3 this year. Edited excerpts.

How do you expect the Indian smartphone market to perform in 2023, after a dull 2022?

I wouldn't call it a bad performance in 2022, I'd rather call it a brutal year, at best. Honestly, I don't believe the market will grow significantly in terms of volumes in 2023. But, I foresee the average selling price of the market going up and hence in value terms, it will grow. And that will be primarily defined by two or three parameters. Firstly, a smartphone is such an overall encompassing part of our lives and people demand more from their phones, they don't want to compromise on features and hence, what used to be typically a Rs 12,000 purchase is similar to buying an Rs 18,000- Rs 20,000 phone. So, people are demanding more which is driving up price points.

Secondly, 5G shipments as a percentage of the total market are also going up. It will probably get to the majority sometime in Q3 of this year. And we know that there is a price difference between a 4G device and a 5G device, which is also causing an increase in the average price points. Hence, I would expect the market to be steady or slightly negative in volume, but grow by about 5%-7% in terms of value, if not more.

Why does it make sense for
Xiaomi to have a lean portfolio in 2023 and beyond?

I can definitely talk on behalf of Xiaomi. I think one of the strengths of Xiaomi in the past was that at every critical price point from Rs 6000 to Rs 20,000, there was one obvious choice of a Xiaomi device.

A cleaner leaner neater portfolio is any day a better option, as opposed to something which has got too many options. It makes it easy for us to manage production and manage procurement. It also makes it easy for the channel to manage inventory. It makes it easy for the retailer and it makes it easy for even the promoter to think of what to sell to a particular customer.

There was a lot of overlap between 4G and 5G across various price points, which is why the portfolio became a little bit unwieldy last year. But we are of course correcting that this year and going forward.

Which price segment is expected to grow more?

It depends. So, the most attractive largest segment is Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000. There's a lot of action in the Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 segment because those are ones where you have all-rounder phones. When it comes to 5G, I believe it's the Rs 10,000 to 15,000 price point, which will perhaps be the defining price point in terms of making 5G truly mass in terms of adoption. But of course, in the above Rs 30,000 segment action, we'll continue with the latest cutting-edge features. But that's a whole different ball game altogether.

Are there features other than 5G that consumers are demanding?

Multiple. One is on display. There's so much OTT content that people consume and then gaming. Both of these are driving demand for AMOLED displays with a high refresh rate of up to 120-hertz refresh rate. Second, because you use your smartphone for so long, people want bigger batteries with fast charging.

The third use case is coming from the creator economy where they're starting to demand a whole lot from the camera, not just in terms of megapixels, but in terms of portraits and macros and 4K video. The third big demand that we are seeing from consumers is on the camera side.

And, last but not least is the design.

Xiaomi is an ecosystem player. With 5G coming in, will Xiaomi look at more product categories?

Our first focus is on home IoT devices, which are smart. So, smart security cameras, air purifiers, water purifiers, lamps and bedside lamps, and so on. That's an existing portfolio that we have. We also have a smart speaker that can control all of them together. I think it's important first to establish and broaden that specific ecosystem before we start talking about the other categories,

How is the wearable segment performing for Xiaomi?

The wearable segment is important for smartphone brands because when you build out this ecosystem, you have an increase in customer retention. When a customer has a phone, smartwatch, and earbuds from your brand, the probability of repeat goes up even further. From that perspective, wearables is a super important category. But, we have a long way to go and further entrenching and building ourselves to be strong in that segment. And that's a segment that we are continuing to focus on.

Muralikrishnan B
