Up to 150,000 new jobs in mobile manufacturing are expected to be created in the country this fiscal as leading companies ‘scout’ for manpower to meet their current requirements and expansion plans.
Top handset manufacturers and makers of associated devices are planning large-scale hiring in the country, driven by the global shift to manufacture beyond China and the Indian government’s production-linked incentives (PLI) scheme, according to staffing companies including TeamLease, Randstad, Quess and Ciel HR Services.
Out of the estimated 120,000-150,000 new jobs to be created this fiscal in this space, about 30,000-40,000 are likely to be direct jobs and the remaining indirect roles mostly on the manufacturing side, staffing company officials said.
According to them, Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron – contract manufacturers of Apple operating in India – besides Tata Group, Salcomp, Samsung, and Nokia are among companies likely to add to their manpower in the country.
“Most mobile brands and their component manufacturing and assembly partners who already have or are looking to set up some form of manufacturing in India are ramping up hiring,” said Kartik Narayan, CEO – staffing at TeamLease Services.
Without disclosing the names of the firms, he said TeamLease currently has more than 2,000 mandates in this space with more in the pipeline.
Quess and Ciel HR officials said they have seen a 100% increase in mandates this fiscal compared to FY23.
“Mobile manufacturers in India have restarted hiring in anticipation of demand boost,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, CEO of Ciel HR Services. “The supply chain issue of chip shortage doesn’t seem to bother them now. We have seen the demand for technicians, supervisors and quality assurance profiles nearly double vis-à-vis the average demand seen in the last two quarters,” he added.
Lohit Bhatia, president, workforce management, at Quess Corp, said, “A majority of this hiring is in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and some locations across the NCR region in Uttar Pradesh.”
Entities based in the South are hiring not only for their expanding facilities but also for existing ones as some of these entities are exporting over $1-billion mobile phones from India, he said.
“Many facilities are shifting to India as they continue their expansion outside and diversify their erstwhile production from China to India, creating numerous manufacturing jobs,” Bhatia added.
According to estimates by Quess, the total number of jobs in this space could cross 500,000 this fiscal, with significant off-roll hiring given that some projects are temporary in nature due to export and demand seasonality.
Narayan of TeamLease said the government’s PLI scheme and the long-term vision of many companies to move production to India to first tap the local market and then leverage the base here to grow production to support sizable exports to the rest of the world are giving a big push to jobs in the sector.
Yeshab Giri, chief commercial officer, staffing & Randstad technologies, at Randstad India, said many global companies have set up their manufacturing facilities in the country, leading to creation of more than 100,000 jobs.
Their growing interest in India could help create roughly 120,000 new jobs in FY24, he said. Of these, 40,000 jobs would be direct roles, and 80,000 would be indirect roles, concentrated mainly on the manufacturing side, with smaller contributions from retail.
According to Randstad estimates, by FY26, at least 300,000 new jobs will be created in mobile manufacturing, with one-third of them being direct employees and another 200,000 being indirect jobs.
“The sector is now a magnet for job seekers of all experience levels, offering an attractive opportunity for employment,” Giri said.
Roles in demand include technicians in electronics, electrical, information technology, assembly operator, line supervisor, mobile assembler, junior technician, engineering manager, and data engineer.
