NEW DELHI: The use of open data<\/a> will encourage transparency, debate and potentially redu\"\"ce costs for the Indian economy, said Ravi Shankar Prasad<\/a>, minister for communications and information technology.

\n“Availability of data is an integral part of good governance and the open data platform helps in further strengthening participatory democracy,” said Prasad while inaugurating the National Conference on Open Data and Open API here on Thursday.

\nOpen data is information that is freely available for use, reuse and redistribution, free from copyright and patent mechanisms.
\n
\nOpen data falls under one of the nine pillars of the government’s “Digital India” programme. The conference highlighted open data initiatives being led within states, and advantages of using open data from global bodies such as the World Bank.
\n
\nAn example of the success of open data in governance is the mygov.in portal, which encourages people participation in decision-making.
\n
Prasad said the idea of opening up data is picking up in the government sector, and that it can be used to make economic activity more competitive. At a panel discussion headed by
