As per reports, the DTH operator may announce the launch of the Android set top boxes as soon as this Diwali.
As per reports, the Dish Android set top box may come with JioFiber like abilities such as 4K viewing, cable TV, OTT app (Netflix<\/a>, ZEE5, Amazon Prime<\/a> Video, Hotstar etc) support.
\"We are monitoring new technology developments and are responding to these. In the next few weeks, we are going to introduce connected boxes (android boxes) for the customers who seek new age media entertainment. We also have smart stick at Rs 599,\" Dish TV India Corporate Head (Marketing) Sukhpreet Singh told PTI.
Singh, however, did not reveal price of the proposed set top boxes.
Currently, the operator has a OTT (over-the-top) platform, 'Watcho', that helps it to keep the existing customers enthusiastic and also on-boarding of new subscribers in its network.
The term OTT refers to applications and services which are accessible over the internet.
\"Currently, Watcho is free for six months. But it will attract rentals as we also offer exclusive content,\" Singh said.
On September 5, billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Jio had announced launch of its fibre-based broadband service, offering minimum internet speed of 100 Mbps for Rs 699 a month. JioFiber will offer free voice calling anywhere in the country, unlimited data and video conferencing.
Annual subscribers will get 4K set top box, for streaming TV channels, free while a 4K television set would be complimentary with plans with higher payouts such as 'Gold' and above.
On the other hand, Airtel XStream is being offered at Rs 3,999 (Rs 3,108 from Airtel's website). Dish TV is expected to offer its Android set-top box at about the same price.
